Over the last five months thousands of Whooper Swans have stopped off at their temporary home on the reserve at WWT Martin Mere as they migrated from Iceland to escape The Arctic winter. Numbers are now in their hundreds as the Whooper swans are making their way back to Iceland and the final ‘swan spectacular’ talk was given to visitors this week.
The daily otter talks at 11.30am and 2.30pm will continue where visitors can meet our family of otters: Ned, Thai, Penny, Flick and Belle as they are given their daily feeds.
In addition to the interesting otter talks from Monday 24 March visitors can find out about our Greater flamingos and beaver family as the spring talk programme resumes. All of the talks are included in centre admission (free to WWT members).
At 12.45pm meet at the Greater flamingos to learn fascinating facts including why they are pink, why they stand on one leg and what they eat.
Drop in to the beaver lodge between 2pm and 2.30pm to learn all about these mammals, ask questions, see a beaver skull and physically touch a beaver pelt to feel how soft their fur is.
WWT Martin Mere Wetland Centre is a haven for a host of creatures such as otters, flamingos, beavers, kingfishers, geese and swans. Watch birds from the shelter of our comfortable hides, enjoy an expert walk or talk, or simply watch the world go by in our cafe overlooking our waterfowl collection – there’s plenty to do at a Wetland Centre all year round.
WWT Martin Mere Wetland Centre is open every day (except Christmas Day) from 9.30am to 4.30pm during winter months and 9.30am to 6.00pm during summer months (from 30th March) and parking is free of charge. Situated off the A59, it is signposted from the M61, M58 and M6. The Centre is also accessible via the Southport to Manchester and the Liverpool to Preston line by train from Burscough Rail Stations.
