Question by Missy: What are the benefits of a gluten free diet?

I have heard that people who are gluten free tend to feel better without gluten in their diet. I also heard that a person eating gluten free can also lose a lot of weight. Then I’ve also read that the amount of weight a person can lose cutting out gluten isn’t really significant. That if you don’t need to eat gluten free due to a medical condition it may not even be worth it for you because gluten free foods can be so expensive. I do know that gluten free foods are very expensive. I have a friend with celiac disease and her grocery bills are very high, but she did lose a lot of weight and she looks absolutely fantastic and feels fantastic too.

With her success in mind I am very tempted to try it for myself, but I want to hear from others with experience or knowledge on this as well because I’ve tried the food and honestly I don’t like it very much, but I would try to stick with it if it really does make you feel better and help you lose weight.

For weight loss it depends on what you eat instead. You can be gluten free and eat meats, vegetables, fruits etc or you can be gluten free and eat cake, cookies, ice cream etc. The amount you eat also matters. It doesn’t matter if your gluten free if you eat 3000+ calories a day.

Expense also depends on what you eat. I am gluten free and I eat meats, vegetables, eggs, fruits, tubers and dairy mainly. Yes the food is more expensive than eating junk but its not that expensive. I know people who still eat everything they used to (pasta, bread, baked goods, processed foods etc) and they spend a lot on food. Any packaged gluten free food will be expensive.

I have lost 85 pounds and overall feel better when I cut out gluten/grains. No more headaches, menstrual backaches/cramps, gas, constipation/diarrhea etc. And no, Im not celiacs but gluten free has still made a huge difference.
