The Babies and Alex Bleeker and the Freaks
Thursday, October 3
Bunk Bar
The last time the Babies were in town they played at Holocene and hot damn did they put on a good set. Their live performance sounds almost exactly like that of the album, which is something that can either be a very disappointing or very enjoyable discovery when you’re going to see a band you really dig. Cassie Ramone of Vivian Girls and Kevin Morby of Woods took the best of themselves and assembled with Brian Schleyer and Justin Sullivan to make a cocktail of indie/garage/pop/awesome. I’ve never seen Alex Bleeker and the Freaks but I imagine, based on what I’ve heard from them, that they will be a chill way to begin the night.
9pm, $10, 21+

Peach Kelli Pop, Mean Jeans, Youthbitch and Brain Attack
Thursday, October 3
East End
Quite possibly the best lineup for the best price, females are ruling this show. Probably the first band up (since Portland loves its local bands..sorry, Texas) is the punk band Brain Attack, fronted by spunky ass Chelsea. If I could think of one word to describe them, it’d be “raw.” Raw like almost every piece of meat Gordon Ramsay complains about on Hell’s Kitchen. Youthbitch and Mean Jeans are hella rowdy and known for rallying the crowd but the princess of these performances is Peach Kelli Pop. The Burger Records babe, born as Allie Hanlon, writes and performs all the music (except for live where her friends are in tow). It’ll be a pretty tight show.

Nancy King
Friday, October 4
Bijou Cafe
One never knows why all-of-a-sudden there are lots of Nancy King gigs and then just as all-of-a-sudden there are not. One can only speculate and choose among a menu of possibilities which I won’t go into here. This gig is stellar, meaning each of her band mates is an individual Jazz star, Portland or otherwise. The band: Dan Gaynor, piano; Scott Steed, bass; Chris Brown, drums; Cheryl Alex, flute. Those are major cats. If you haven’t seen Nancy for a while (a good guess, she’s had no regular gigs since her run at Touche ended), see this one. Looking at the price makes you shake your head and realize how lucky you are to be able to see this level of talent at that price.
Doors, 6pm, $5, dinner & full bar available for additional charge, all ages.

Pet Shop Boys
Friday, October 4th
Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall
Portland’s East End boys and West End Girls will have an opportunity to dance to the UK’s most successful pop duo in history (according to The Guinness Book of Records) this Friday night. Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe, better known as Pet Shop Boys, are touring in support of their twelfth studio album, Electric. Set lists from their East Coast tour dates show a nice mix of early PSB hits as well as new material which will have you on your feet. Have a listen to “Vocal” off the new album set to a short film by filmmaker and photographer, Joost Vandeburg. It was created using authentic amateur film footage shot at various raves in the late 80s, along with some footage from the Haçienda in Manchester. The video (and the song) was inspired by the way British youth at this time found its own freedom with a new culture epitomized by dance music and raves: “It’s in the music/It’s in the song/And the feeling of the warmth around us all is so strong.” tickets

Inspired by and compared to The National, Bon Iver and Mates of State, the band describes their latest effort as an “intersection between anthemic rock, electronic pop, and symphonic orchestration.” Special Guests: John Whaley (on trumpet), Rebekah Hanson (on viola) and Kendra Carpenter (on cello). Father John Misty (solo) and Kate Berlant
Monday, October 7
The Aladdin Theater
If I could stare in the face of one man for the rest of my life, it’d be J. Tillman. More famously known as Father John Misty, he’s done quite well for himself after leaving Fleet Foxes. His album Fear Fun has produced delights like “Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings,” “Everyman Needs a Companion” and the video featured below, “This is Sally Hatchet.” His croon will make your dreams as sweet as diabetes. Opening up for him is comedian Kate Berlant, bringing the laughs before the sex.

Michael Franti & Spearhead
Tuesday, October 8
McDonald Theater (Eugene)
Though Michael Faranti & Spearhead broke through in the 90’s with their darker-topic songs like “Hole in a Bucket” and “Crime to be Broke in America” the group’s hits have migrated over time to show a more uplifting and optimistic side of their music. In 2008 the hit “Say Hey (I love you)” hit #18 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #1 on Billboard’s R&B chart introducing themselves to a second generation of music listeners. With special guest Ethan Tucker.

Gold-Cuenca-Peterson Organ Trio
Jarod Gold
Tuesday, October 8
Camellia Lounge
They may have a clunky name but, as they wrote, “This trio features organist Jared Gold who is very much in-demand in NYC and internationally. He has been working with guitarist Dave Stryker, John Abercrombie, Oliver Lake, Vincent Herring, and was recently voted Downbeat magazine “Rising Star of the Organ”. Sylvia Cuenca is a drummer originally from San Jose, California but has been living in the NYC area since 1985. Over these years she has performed with saxophonist Joe Henderson for 4 years and trumpet legend Clark Terry for 17 years. She has also performed with Billy Taylor, Kenny Barron, Eddie Henderson, Michael Brecker, Lew Soloff, Dave Stryker and many others. On guitar is Milo Peterson from Seattle. Milo has been active in the Pacific Northwest since the 1970′s. He has worked with Mose Allison, Joe Sample, Ernestine Anderson, Billy Hart and Cedar Walton to name a few. Fiery jazz, soulful guitar, bluesy organ and funky drum grooves!!! They will be playing arrangements of jazz standards, Brazilian standards as well as some original material.”
