New world heritages sites have recently been added into the selection of new sites situated in various countries around the world. The World Heritage List has been announced by the The United Nations agency and recognized by the World Heritage Committee of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) with a view to preserving humanity\’s cultural heritage. The new heritage sites include the Central Highlands in Sri Lanka, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area in Tanzania, Historic Villages of Korea: Hahoe and Yangdong, the Papahânaumokuâkea islands, the Bikini Atoll in Marshall Islands, and the Australian Convict Sites. Let\’s take a tour around the planet to enjoy the 6 newest world heritage sites.

The Central Highlands in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka\’s highlands are situated in the south-central part of Ski Lanka, reaches an elevation of up to 2,500 meters above sea level. The area includes the Peak Wilderness Protected Area, the Horton Plains National Park and the Knuckles Conservation Forest

The Central Highlands is described as a “super biodiversity hotspot” by The UNESCO. This is the habitat for a wide range of flora and fauna consisting of some rare animal species such as Sri Lankan leopard, the Horton Plains slender loris.

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area in Tanzania

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is recognized as the World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It is a conservation area which is situated 180 km west of Arusha in the Crater Highlands area of Tanzania

This site is the vivid concentration of wild animals, filled by a deep lake, and the active volcano of Oldonyo Lenga. This destination is also seen to be one of our ancestors, Homo habilis including early hominid footprints, dating back 3.6 million years

Historic Villages of Korea: Hahoe and Yangdong (Republic of Korea)

Hahoe and Yangdong, 2 historic clan villages in the Republic of Korea were found in the 14th-15th centuries. These sites are surrounded with mountains and face out onto a river and open agricultural fields. The tile-roofed houses of the nobility were built beside the mountain ridges

They are the representative for the distinctive aristocratic Confucian culture of the early part of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910). The landscapes of trees, mountains, and water around the village came into the beauty of 17th and 18th century poets

The Papahânaumokuâkea islands

Papah?naumoku?kea includes 10 small islands and atolls of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. I is the first marine site of the U.s, and the first cultural seascape in the world

The Bikini Atoll in Marshall Islands

The Bikini Atoll was the site of atomic weapons testing during the period predating Cold War including the first H-bomb in 1952

Bikini Atoll is now seen to be a monument and memorial to the dawn of the nuclear age. It consists of 23 islands which surrounds a deep 229.4-square-mile (594.1 km2) central lagoon

The Australian Convict Sites

Comprising 11 sites in New South Wales, Tasmania, Norfolk Island and Western Australia. , the Australian Convict Sites are highlighted by their rich convict history in the 18th and 19th centuries

Each of the site has a specific purpose such as punitive imprisonment and rehabilitation through forced labour to build the colony. The Australian Convict Sites are also best-known as the Sites of Punishment
