Encouraging Participation in Handicap Racing:
The greatest area of growth potential in the sport is handicap racing. Unlike one design classes, which are limited to only the boats made of each type, handicap racing can include all keelboat types. Better yet, since boats became made of fiberglass, they seemingly last forever.
So if there is an interest to get boats on the race course, the mission then is to have events that encourage participation. People need to feel like the racing is fair, and the level of competition meets their level of investment. And of course, it should be fun too.

Making it Happen for Women:
The Magenta Project aims to advance women in the sport of professional sailing, and promote inclusion, diversity and positive female role models in society at large. Cressida Robson attended a clinic the organization hosted this month in Miami and provides this report.
The training event attracted 17 women from ages 17 to 58 from six countries across Europe and the Americas, with a variety of sailing backgrounds from college sailors and coaches; to veterans of offshore racing, Olympic campaigns and match racing.
