Field Service Engineer

Plans, coordinates activities and carries out installation of new equipment, investigates and resolves customer reports of technical problems with equipment and software, eliminates future operational or service difficulties, and provides customer training by performing the duties listed below. This position also promotes and directly markets to customers billable service products on a commission or incentive basis to help produce service revenue. Extensive travel is involved using both ground and air transportation (requiring credit card). Potential for international travel too.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Installs new or modified equipment at customers' facilities to ensure full functionality according to product specifications.

Develops and conducts training on the safe operations of the equipment and demonstrates skills to customers, trainees, and other field engineers.

Schedules and makes sales calls to customers to promote, market, persuade and take orders for service products (service contracts, parts and labor).

Secures opportunities to quote on customer requirements and follows up on quotes to obtain orders.

Prepares and conducts product demonstrations at sales calls, customer sites, trade shows, and demonstration/training facilities on own or in collaboration with sales and marketing group and others.

Reviews and interprets performance reports and documentation from customers and field representatives, and inspects malfunctioning or damaged product to determine nature and scope of problem.

Analyzes review and inspection findings, determines source of problem, and decides corrective action.

Orders part and supplies on behalf of customer for machine repairs.

Coordinates problem resolution with engineering, customer service, and other personnel to expedite remedy or repair of equipment.

Provides on-site technical assistance to help troubleshoot and repair equipment.

Maintains records of performance reports.

Analyzes reports of technical problems to determine trends affecting future design, production, service, and maintenance processes, and recommends modifications to eliminate future problems.

Develops service handbooks and bulletins based on field investigations, engineering changes, and overall knowledge of product.

Provides a communication link between the customer and the company to help ensure that effective service is provided to the customer.

Qualifications: Optical lab experience is a must. Individual must be able to travel extensively (domestic and worldwide) using ground and air transportation systems; able to secure airline tickets, car rentals and hotel accommodations through use of personal credit card.

Education/Experience: Associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school, plus four (4) years of technical experience in an ophthalmic lab environment; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Computer Skills: Requires proficiency in using various types of computer software products including e-mail, word processing, order processing, contact management and spreadsheet programs.
