On November 3rd, openness and immigrant rights advocates will come together for a Town Hall to discuss the need for greater transparency and oversight in immigration detention. We invite you to participate in an open discussion lead by experts working to improve accountability in the immigration detention system.
The Town Hall will address the secrecy surrounding the U.S. immigration detention system, and how it presents significant obstacles to reform. Speakers include Antonio Ginnatta (Human Rights Watch), Elizabeth Hempowicz (Project on Government Oversight), and Mary Small (Detention Watch Network). The speakers will discuss the access to information issues they have encountered in their own work, and how they believe the system should be made more open and accountable.
Audience participants are invited to share their own experiences and insights with transparency and oversight in immigration detention, and are encouraged to bring questions and ideas.

Who:
Antonio Ginatta is the advocacy director for the US Program at Human Rights Watch. Prior to joining Human Rights Watch, he served as executive policy advisor for government operations and homeland security for Governor Chris Gregoire in Washington State, and as a legal advisor for the Washington Army National Guard. His work has focused on policy and legal issues that impact immigrants in the United States. He started his legal career at Columbia Legal Services, representing low-income immigrants in central Washington State.
Elizabeth Hempowicz is Policy Counsel at the Project on Government Oversight. She oversees POGO’s legislative reform work, with a focus on whistleblower protections and government accountability. Liz develops and advances public policies to combat corruption and to promote openness and accountability in government. She has participated in efforts to improve lobbying and congressional ethics rules, whistleblower protections, the Freedom of Information Act, and other open government initiatives.
Mary Small is Policy Director at Detention Watch Network. She is responsible for leading DWN's research, policy analysis, and congressional and administrative advocacy in strategic ways to dismantle the US's detention industry. Mary loves doing policy work that is informed by and accountable to the deep and rich expertise of the entire Network.
