Pritzker Pavilion is the focal point of Millennium Park and a favored gathering spot of Chicagoans and visitors alike. Frank Gehry's 2004 outdoor music pavilion is the setting for more than 100 free concerts, films and programs each year. During the summer, the historic Grant Park Music Festival (begun in 1935) presents 30 classical concerts over the course of 10 weeks. Other program series at the pavilion include: Downtown Sound, Loops & Variations, the Summer Film Series, Made in Chicago: World Class Jazz, Millennium Park Presents and the Chicago Jazz Festival. Ribbons of steel burst from the pavilion's bandshell—a trademark of Gehry's world-famous style. The 320-by-700-foot great lawn facing the stage is over-topped by a trellis of soaring, curved steel pipes that support suspended speakers. This design offers a column-free, state-of-the-art listening experience for audiences of up to 10,000.
