The New York Boat Show, presented by the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA), returns to the Javits Center in Manhattan from January 21st through the 25th. Once again, the Recreational Fishing Alliance (RFA) has put together a full line-up of informative fishing seminars covering topics including electronics, Hudson and East River striped bass, Jamaica Bay sportfishing, NY Bight pelagics and offshore bluefin, as well as fluke, tautog and more!
The show opens Wednesday, January 21st at noon and runs through 9 pm. Seminars kick off at 3 p.m. with RFA’s Jim Hutchinson talking about the spring run of striped bass (including a regulatory update for New York and New Jersey), followed by Capt. Joe Wenegenofsky of Bloodline Sportfishing in Montauk spotlighting blackfish. Don’t miss Boating on the Hudson’s John Vargo in at 7 p.m. in a talk on Hudson River stripers above the GW Bridge!
On Thursday, January 22nd, doors open again at noon with Allen Schneider of SI-TEX Marine Electronics in Riverhead, NY presenting a special talk on the Automatic Identification System or AIS. At 5 p.m., join Capt. Vinnie Calabro of Karen Ann Charters in Howard Beach with a unique look at Jamaica Bay fishing opportunities, followed by a spotlight on fly and light tackle fishing in NY Bight with Capt. Joe Mattioli of On the Bite Charters in Staten Island.
After the doors open at noon on Friday the 23rd, Capt. John Luchka of Long Run Fishing Charters and Navionics takes to the seminar stage at 3 p.m. to showcase a unique use of fishing electronics to improve your post Sandy fish score. At 5 p.m., Capt. Blaine Anderson of Anderson Guide Service & Humminbird electronics spotlights trophy bass on live bait, while East End charter boat captain Joe Paradiso describes the outstanding striper fishing to be had in North Fork aboard Eastern Long Island Sportfishing Charters.
Get to the Javits Center early on Saturday, January 24th when the gates open at 10 a.m., as you won’t want to miss Capt. Tony Dilernia’s talk on East River striped bass action aboard his Rocket Charters out of lower Manhattan; that starts at 11 a.m. Capt. Blaine Anderson returns to the seminar area at 12:30 with a special look at modern day electronics, while Staten Island’s own Capt. Frank Crescitelli from Finchaser Charters will have you throwing a castnet like a pro at 2 p.m. If local doormats are your thing, Brooklyn’s Capt. Austin Perilli from Guide to Go Charters goes on the hunt for big, local fluke at 3:30 p.m., while White Water Outfitters offshore pro Capt. Bryce Poyer details the best way to rig for big bluefin and bigeye tuna in the season ahead.
Doors reopen at 10 a.m. for the final day on Sunday, January 25th, with spoon fishing expert Tony “Maja” Arcabascio detailing the ins and outs of trolling for trophy striped bass using his unique system of braid or wire line at 11 a.m. At noon, hit the local snags with Port Washington’s Capt. Rich Tenreiro of R&G Charters in search of blackfish, followed by Newsday’s “Outdoor Tom” Schlichter at 1 p.m. in a spotlight on doormat fluke. Don’t miss a special presentation at 2 p.m. on Sunday the 25th with the team from Sea Safety International and a look at offshore safety essentials, with special focus on life rafts, flotation, EPIRBs and all you need to know about safety on the fishing grounds, whether you’re a for-hire guy or just a private angler.
