One Direction’s On the Road Again concert trek hits No. 1 on the weekly roundup of Hot Tours with sales reported from the first of two South African cities on its schedule. Johannesburg hosted the boy band for two concerts at FNB Stadium, the largest stadium on the African continent with 94,700 seats and host venue during the 2010 World Cup. The pop stars performed at the massive soccer stadium on March 28 and 29, grossing more than $6.2 million from 131,615 sold tickets.
The tour had already played 12 markets in Australia and Asia before heading to South Africa in late-March. Since the Feb. 7 launch in Sydney, overall sales from the On the Road Again tour top $74 million from 21 sold out performances in eight countries. Next on the itinerary is the first European leg of the tour, set to begin on June 5 in Cardiff, Wales.
