Last weekend we took a look at International Rivers and how they are ““at the heart of the global struggle to protect rivers and the rights of communities that depend on them.” While rivers are my favorite body of water, they aren’t by any means the only ones that that are essential to the livelihood of nearby communities (and it’s not just communities in the developing world that are so dependent on bodies of water). That’s why we’re going to take today to look at a non-profit organization that aims to protect a single watershed. Heal the Bay is devoted to protecting and reviving Santa Monica Bay, “the centerpiece of Los Angeles’ beach culture, and the geographic center of the LA region.” They’re based in Santa Monica, CA, and they’re focused on both the aesthetic and economic reasons for healing the bay.
One Bay One Job
Beyond the typical non-profit stuff, Heal the Bay also runs the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium. Ideally, you would go there to learn more about Santa Monica Bay, but if you can’t make it, you’ll have to settle for the information on Heal the Bay’s About the Bay page. That’s probably the best place to start your research. Once you know more about the bay, you can read up on Heal the Bay’s history and their current work (which is focused in the areas of Science, Education, Community Action, and Advocacy). If you want to consider a career with Heal the Bay, this is extremely important stuff to know about. Local environmental organizations often deal with a lot of nuance, and it’s very important that you understand the context of the work that they’re doing. Once you’ve done your required reading, it’s time to look at Heal the Bay’s Careers page. Right now they have three open positions and they all look like they could be a good fit for a new or recent grad: Coastal Cleanup Day Coordinator, Volunteer and Community Advocacy Manager, and Fundraising Coordinator. If you love Santa Monica Bay, one of these jobs would be a great fit.
