GoPro cameras have been used by many athletes, action-sports enthusiasts, film producers, photographers and videographers to take high-quality video. As we all know, GoPro records in MPEG-4 and outputs its files as .MP4 files (the container). Files are compressed using the h.264 codec (as opposed to AAC or Xvid and DivX usually found in .AVI containers). So the files you are getting out of GoPro HD are suited to be delivered as is. If your MP4 files does not meet the requirement for editing, your Media Server from Mac OS Sierra/ El Capitan will also refuse to open and play. There is no other solution but you will need a MP4 to MOV Video Converter to Convert GoPro Hero 4 MP4 files to MOV with easy steps. Here I share a simple guide.

Additional Tips: Best Video Editing Software for GoPro for Mac
There are three different options I’d recommend if you’re looking for GoPro editing software for your Mac.
The options are:
Adobe Premiere Pro (read my write-up above, the same information applies to Mac users)
Final Cut Pro X
iMovie (free video editing software that comes with Macs)
Final Cut Pro X
Final Cut Pro X is, in my opinion, the second best GoPro editing software for Mac users after Premiere Pro.
If you’re using one of the more upgraded Apple laptops or an iMac then you’ll probably want to use Premiere, but if you have a less-powerful Macbook Pro or a Macbook Air then I’d say that Final Cut Pro X is a better choice for you.
In my experience FCPX runs more smoothly on my Mac compared to Premiere Pro but you might have a different experience so it’s up to you to decide with editing program you want to use.
Getting Started
Final Cut Pro X is a very straightforward editing program for Mac that will allow you to create amazing looking GoPro videos using your footage. It features a similar layout to iMovie, which is why I like it, and only after a few hours of watching tutorials you should be able to make some pretty stunning movies.
The workflow is streamlined, helping you focus on editing your footage rather than playing around with different effects and controls, and in FCPX you can even edit 4k footage which is awesome if you’re using the Hero 4 Black.
FCPX is a professional editing software and I think it’s one of the direct competitors to Adobe Premiere Pro so you can keep that in mind when you’re considering the quality and capabilities that it has.
Editing your clips is easy, just drag-and-drop your footage into the editing window and then start with your cuts and arrangement.
Once you’re done editing you can add titles, custom effects and you can even use Final Cut Pro X’s own Motion 5 software which allows you to create stunning graphics, text animations and 2-D/3-D titles.
Thoughts
I definitely recommend using Final Cut Pro X if you are editing on a Mac computer and you want something a little bit more packed with features than iMovie.
With FCPX you’ll be able to create professional quality videos and edit your footage in the most practical and viewing friendly format.

iMovie
iMovie is the free editing software that comes with Mac computers and although it’s basic it’s good enough if all you want to do is edit your footage to share with your friends and family.
It features a very easy-to-use interface and it was recently updated to support 4K video.
Getting Started
You’ll definitely want to check out some iMovie tutorials before you start editing but, if there’s any program on this list that you can just jump right into, I’d say that it’s this one.
Both Premiere Pro and FCPX are more professional editing programs but iMovie is the most beginner-friendly and easy-to-use option.
To start editing your clips you’ll need to create a new project and just drag-and-drop them into the editing window. You can cut, rearrange, remove sound, add effects and even change the colors for each clip before you export.
You’ll also be able to add titles, transitions and apply a small variety of different effects such as zoom and stabilization to the footage as well.
I actually got started using iMovie, once i realized GoPro Studio just wasn’t cutting it anymore, and I used it for a long time before making the change to FCPX. Most of my best videos were made on iMovie and it’s still one of my favorite GoPro editing softwares if I need to make a quick, simple clip.
Thoughts
If you’re using a Mac computer and you’re looking for a free GoPro editing software then iMovie is the way to go.
It’s perfectly designed for beginners but it still comes with all the capabilities you need to make stunning and beautiful videos with your footage.
