The whole world is under the grip of terrorism and innocent people are killed through terrorist attacks. Many extremist groups target important dignitaries and politicians in order to create disturbance in the region. Due to the high security, targeting political leaders is very difficult. Still, politicians are targeted and assassinated all over the world. Suicide bombings are also very common these days. Who can ever forget the crash of World Trade Centers? Here is a list of bombing incidents that have taken the lives of various political leaders.

 

10. Ahmad Khan Samangani



Ahmad Khan Samangani, a well- known politician of Afghanistan was killed by a suicide attack while he was in his daughter’s wedding party. On 14th July, 2012, Ahmad Khan was amidst a social gathering when a suicide bomber pretended to be a guest and detonated the bomb killing the Uzbek MP and 22 other innocent people. The incident occurred in Aybak, the provincial capital. Ahmad Khan Samangani was elected as the Member of Parliament last year and had served as a member of the Mujahideen during Afghanistan civil wars.

 

9. Aden Yabarow Wiish



On 4th April, 2012, a suicide bomb killed Somalian sport official along with 10 others. The bomb was targeted at the Somalian President who got lucky and came out of the newly inaugurated theatre safely. The suicide bomber was a woman and the Al Shabab group claimed responsibility of the incident. Aden Yabarow Wiish was the chairman of the Olympic committee of Somalia.

 

8. Dawoud Rajha



The Syrian Defense minister was killed by a suicide attack on 18th July, 2012 at 7.41pm in Beirut. The suicide bomber entered the high security zone and killed two other political dignitaries. This shameful act has been severely condemned. The Syrian rebels constructed the whole plot and had targeted the Syrian government.

 

7. Malik Qasim

Leader of the Awami National Party, Malik Qasim lost his life when he was attacked by a suicide bomber on 13th July, 2012. The incident took place amidst the crowded area of Quetta in Pakistan. A girl of 8 years was also killed and 10 others were injured in this gruesome attack.

 

6. Pritpal Singh Pal

On 14th July, 2012, Pritpal Singh Pal, a former politician was attending the wedding party of Ahmad Khan Samgani’s daughter. The crowd was attacked by a suicide bomber and killed Pritpal Singh Pal. Pritpal was a contender in the last general elections. This attack was master planned by the Taliban.

 

5. General Hasan Turkmani

General Hasan Turkmani, former defense minister of Syria, was killed by a suicide attack carried out by a group of Syrian rebels in Beirut. The incident took place on 18th July, 2012 as the attacker easily breached into the high security zone. General Hasan Turkmani was seriously injured and was rushed to the hospital where he was declared dead.

 

4. Lalit Narayan Mishra

Lalit Narayan Mishra, the railway minister of India, died after facing a bomb attack in Samastipur in Bihar. This incident took place on 2rd January, 1975 and left him with serious injuries. He breathed his last the next day. He had gone to Samastipur to inaugurate a broad gauge railway line.

 

3. Assef Shawkat

Assef Shawkat, deputy defense minister of Syria, lost his life by a suicide attack on 18th July, 2012 in Beirut. He succumbed to serious injuries and died on his way to the hospital. He was also the son-in-law of Bashar al-Assad who is the President of Syria. Assef Shawkat was previously the head of the military intelligence. The incident was criticized by political leaders of the world. It is also believed that Assef Shawkat had escaped a murder attempt earlier.

 

2. Benazir Bhutto

Benazir Bhutto was one of the most proficient leaders of Pakistan and had served as the Prime Minister twice. She was attacked by suicide bomb during a political rally at the Liaquat National Bagh in Rawalpindi. She was then the leader of the Pakistan People’s Party and was gearing up for the coming elections. The incident took place on 27th December, 2007. She was first shot several times and later succumbed to serious injuries by a suicide bomb. She was rushed to the hospital but could not survive. Twenty four other people also lost their lives. She was facing a constant life threat as she had survived a previous attack similar to this one.

 

1. Rajiv Gandhi

One of the most prominent political leader and ex-prime minister of India was subjected to suicide attack on 21st May, 1991. Son of late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi was attacked by a suicide bomber named Thenmozhi Rajratnam in Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu. Rajiv Gandhi had gone to Sriperumbudur to address a campaign rally. The suicide bomber came close to the Mr. Gandhi and detonated the bomb placed inside her clothes. The huge explosion killed Rajiv Gandhi at the spot along with 14 other innocent people. The incident occurred at 10.21pm and the whole nation was stunned by the ghastly act. The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) owned responsibility of the gruesome incident.
