Original Painting. Photo taken, with glossy finish applied and in different lighting than the print below. (Notice how fuzzy and washed out this photo is).

Giclee Print by Faville Photo. This photo was taken, on a different day than the photo of the original, by me; it is closer to the original painting than the picture of the original above.

Faville Photo is much more than your typical printer, who takes your uploaded photo and prints it for you.  They can reproduce your artwork too.  I took my latest painting to them and received a painting print on unstretched  canvas. Their use of giclée printing and high-resolution digital scans and photos makes certain your artwork, whether it is a picture or a painting, comes out looking just the way you want it to – looking like the original!  I am excited to tell you more about this exceptional service on OMG Goodies.

My Thoughts about my Painting Print by Faville Photo:

I fell in love with a photograph taken by Emily Stott.

Emily is not a professional photographer.  In fact, she took her photograph while serving a full-time mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Still the creative angle of the subject matter, the LDS Mesa Temple, and the colors of the flowers and sky enlivened my spirit and elicited feelings of joy in my heart. I decided to paint my own copy of her photograph.

I’m no professional painter.  In fact, this was only my third time painting on canvas, and only my second true attempt. Still, I was excited with how it turned out and I shared the picture of my painting on Facebook. I couldn’t have been more excited to have someone ask if they could have a copy. I knew nothing about getting a painting print, but I knew it was possible.  I started researching, and found giclée prints are the best format for a painting reproduction.

The process of producing a giclée print uses high resolution, digital scans and an 8 to 12 color printer. A giclée printer will print on quality archival paper with archival quality ink. Many pieces of art work found in museums and art galleries are giclée prints. Every detail of a painting can be captured through the giclée process.

In order to get the best giclée print possible, having the printers take their own photos of the painting is the best way to go. Though they are capable of printing from your submitted prints, doing so may limit the quality of the giclée.

I took my painting to John, owner of Faville Photo, and left my painting for him to work with. Faville Photo’s studio is a home-based studio located in Mesa, Arizona. It is small, but John is absolutely wonderful to work with and he does a great job. Faville does offer on-site product/painting shoots if you prefer to go that route. There is an additional fee for that service. For me, going to Faville made more sense!

John took photos of my painting, which was more difficult than others to photograph because of the high gloss finish I put on it. Once the painting was photographed, John went to work color-matching and fixing any inconsistencies between the original painting and what would be the painting print. Usually this process takes a few days.  Our schedules ended up have some conflicts, we were able to get together about two weeks after I dropped off the painting.

When I did return, John showed me a proof of the painting print.  I was able to approve the color-matching and resolution of the print.  This was also when I was able to decide what paper I wanted to have my painting print printed on. John showed me three options for my particular painting. There are a few others listed on the Faville website.

The watercolor paper was one of my options. I was interested in seeing this paper and considered when I would want to use it.  Watercolor paper is smooth with a matte finish and a strong weight.  It is called watercolor paper, because it would be the perfect paper for a watercolor painting print!  It would also be wonderful for charcoal, color pencil, ink, oil pastels, and acrylic gouache.  It may also be wonderful for other acrylic paintings where a matte finish is desired.

The photo paper comes in matte, semi-gloss, gloss, and premium luster. It wasn’t quite what I wanted as a painting print, but it is absolutely perfect for all-things photo related. Photo prints start with sizes as small as 2″ x 3″ wallets up to a 40″ x 60″. You have never seen such a beautiful photo as a large giclée photo printed by Faville Photo.

I chose for my painting print to be printed on canvas.  The canvas allows for the same texture of the original painting. While my print was not stretched over a frame, it looks absolutely beautiful, and, if stretched, telling the original from the copy would be nearly impossible. It is an absolutely perfect way to capture an original painting.

One of the most wonderful parts of Faville Photo is the way they handle your files. Now that my painting has been photographed and color-matched, I do not have to worry about taking it back again, or going through the full process again.  I can call or email Faville and they will print another copy for me in whatever standard size I want up to 36″ x 48″ with the possibility of larger. When asked whether the quality would suffer with the larger print, I was told unequivocally – no.  The high resolution of the photo file of the painting, is such that extremely large prints will print with the same quality and look of the smaller prints.

With Faville Photo, you can have your art work reproduced to make selling it easier. People are more likely to purchase prints and this is a great way to provide your public with beautiful prints with a more affordable price point.

You don’t have to be an artist to enjoy Faville Photo.  Print your favorite home photos. They can be printed on standard photo paper as well as various others, including canvas. Enjoy a true, quality print, whether on photo paper or canvas, and know it will last, by using Faville Photo.

My friend now has her copy of my painting, and she is thrilled to have it! She will be framing it to place in her new home she is having built.  I was thrilled to be able to give it to her!  I could not have done so without the help from John at Faville Photo. Thank you, John!
