My Thoughts About the Intro to Baking Set by Handstand Kitchen:
My mom made sure none of her children would starve when we moved out of the house. She didn’t provide us with meals. Instead, she taught us the basic necessities of cooking. At one point, she told me I either needed a husband who cooked or who didn’t like to eat. My desire to cook has never been strong. Luckily, I do have the skills required to prepare dinners. I can do simple baking too. In fact, people tell me my chocolate chip cookies are the best. Great job, Nestle Toll House! In all fairness, I am capable of baking other cookies. My homemade sugar cookies are delicious and do not come from the refrigerator section of the grocery aisle.
I lack the patience and the wherewithal to teach my children how to cook. When my kids ask to help in the kitchen, I duck my head and say, “Not this time, I really just want to get this done.” (Usually, because it’s almost bedtime and I really do have to be quick!) The Intro to Baking Set by Handstand Kitchen has given me and my daughters the ability to work together in the kitchen. They can learn and I can oversee with the knowledge that they can handle the tasks given to them.
The set:
This incredible baking set comes with 17 tools which include a spatula, pastry brush, mixing spoon, whisk, rolling pin, silicone baking dish, 6 silicone baking cups, and 5 recipe cards. The whisk is covered with silicone in 5 different colors and has a metal handle. The other variously colored tools are silicone with wooden handles. The colorful kitchen tools draw every child’s eye in and are the perfect size for smaller hands to use.
Additional kitchen tools are required for the recipes included. For instance, the Apple Crisp Crumble calls for the use of measuring cups, measuring spoons, 2 large bowls, cutting board, 9-inch square baking pan, and a knife. The tools used from the set are the spatula and the mixing spoon. However, the Apple Crisp Crumble can bake in the included baking pan and baking cups, if desired! Did I mention how delicious it is?
The Skills:
In reality, I am not as bad in the kitchen as I may have originally intimated. My youngest (10) makes all of her sandwiches and lunches. All of my children make Ramen, Mac and Cheese, and other simple meals including enchilada casserole and various pasta dishes. The youngest asks to help make dinner and recognizing my responsibility to teach her, I welcome the help on most occasions. That said, I only give her tasks I can walk away from.
It surprised me how little baking with my daughters frustrated me while using the Intro to Baking Set. With everything smaller, my daughters were able to use the tools and not end up with a pile of apples and honey all over the counter. I read the instructions to my daughters because I wanted them to do the work. I found they easily followed the steps. The best part was watching them work together and laughing along side of them. I was also able to answer the few questions they had.
The Apple Crisp Crumble includes slicing apples and measuring both solids and liquids. That’s OK. This is a baking set that grows with your child. Start them stirring and pouring measured ingredients in the bowl. As they get older, they can measure the ingredients, which teaches math skills. Next, comes the cutting and the ability to adjust the recipe as necessary. I learned it is possible to have fun with my children in the kitchen as long as they have the right tools!
