On a scale of one to Buffalo, how dreary do you think Omaha is compared to the rest of America? Well, it’s good news. Omaha is actually the most average city when it comes to being dreary. Yes, you read that right. I’m actually quite happy to describe something ‘average’ for once.
According to meteorologist Brian Brettschneider, Omaha is ranked No. 38 on his list of the most grey and wet cities in America – i.e. the most dreary. Using a formula that takes into account annual precipitation, number of days with precipitation, and cloudiness, Brettschneider has determined that the “dreariest” place in the United States to live is… Buffalo.
Brian based the study on three variables; 1. Annual precipitation 2. Measurable percipitation and 3. Cloud coverage. Out of these Omaha scored a 17 on the dreary index.
Brian does admit there may have been some bias involved in choosing the cities:
This is right about the time where people in the Northeast are getting defensive. How can Buffalo be as dreary as Seattle or how can Pittsburgh be as dreary as Portland? Of course this methodology is completely arbitrary and far from perfect, but it is a start. Also keep in mind that neither temperature, wind, nor solar energy were used in the calculation. In my mind, a dreary day is wet and gray – therefore, this analysis only used variables that reflect those characteristics.
The top 10 most dreary cities:
1. Buffalo
2. Seattle
3. Pittsburgh
4. Portland
5. Clevelend
6. Cincinnati
7. Lexington
8. Boston
9. Newark
10. Milwaukwee
