Key Requirements

8.1. Diploma in Analytical Chemistry or equivalent qualification.
8.2. 5 years experience in a Petroleum Refinery Laboratory and familiarity with advanced computerized Laboratory equipment.
OR
8.1. Higher Secondary School Certificate (on completion of 12 years education) offering Science subjects.
8.2. 8 years experience in Petroleum Refinery Laboratory and familiarity with advanced computerized Laboratory equipment.
8.3. Good command of written and spoken English.
8.4. Computer literate.

Job Description

1. BASIC FUNCTIONS

Supervises the activities carried out by the assigned Lab. Technicians and Sample Collectors and renders assistance to the assigned Lab. Technician. Reviews all testing techniques and analysis results and prepares Laboratory reports.

Carries out analyses on all Refinery samples such as crude oils, intermediate and finished petroleum products, utility water samples, lube oil samples, scales and sludge from different units, corrosion products, catalysts, process chemicals, industrial wastes, effluent water, samples related with environmental pollution control, gases, granulated Sulphur, GUP (Area IV) water samples and other related substances in accordance to established standard methods

Applies wet chemistry techniques and uses sophisticated, state-of-the-art computerized laboratory analyzers requiring computer literacy, special skills, care & experience, for plant control, quality control, product certification, corrosion control etc.

2. WORK PERFORMED.

2.1. Gives instructions and assigns work to Laboratory Technicians and Sample Collectors and coordinates their activities during afternoons and night shifts, weekends & public holidays.

2.2. Follows up on instructions received from Production Planning and Economics Section Head for certification of products for export, quality control, preparation of trial blends, vessels loading, samples requirements and special analyses for 3rd parties.

2.3. Ensures that Sample Collectors properly label, seal, catalogue and arrange in an orderly manner the laboratory retention samples and the samples delivered to vessels.

2.4. Installs, commissions and calibrates new equipment; checks and carries out trial runs on newly installed or repaired Laboratory apparatus and analyzers and trains Lab. Technicians on the proper use of them.

2.5. Carries out quality acceptance physical and chemical analyses on purchased raw materials prior to storage for in-process use.

2.6. Updates inventory records of chemical reagents, reference test oils, calibration gases and blends, equipment spares and consumable supplies through Maximo software applications. Generates new Laboratory forms as and when needed.

2.7. Works closely with the operations and provides technical assistance during plant upset or modification, shutdown and start up of units, in conjunction with Operations Department, and ensures that analyses are carried out at the required intervals of time.

2.8 Conducts Laboratory experimental studies to determine the cause of any problems affecting product quality, minimize products quality give away to curtail revenue losses on critical specifications and for product quality improvement.

2.9 Ensures that high level safety measures are taken while dealing with hazardous, toxic, harmful, carcinogenic hydrocarbon vapours, solvents, chemicals and explosive gases.

2.10 Monitors and advises GUP Operation Section of chemical dosing rates for pre-treatment and post-treatment systems. Where applicable, performs sampling and testing at the units.

2.11 Carries out physical and chemical analyses on BP/ASTM/AGCC Laboratory correlation samples as well as tests on samples received from other operating centres of the Company, sister companies and Third parties.

2.12 Ensures safe and good housekeeping of Lab. Complies with all HSE Regulations including the use of proper protective clothing and equipment and ensures all personnel working in his area comply with HSE Regulations.

2.13 Assists Senior Lab. Chemist/Lab. Chemist / Lab. Supervisors in their day-to-day activities. Includes Checking the proper operation and accurate calibration of all testing equipment and reporting faults to Senior Lab. Chemist/Lab. Chemist / Lab. Supervisors for necessary corrective action.

2.14 Carries out other similar or related duties, as assigned. Includes preparing work orders for necessary equipment repairs via MAXIMO, maintaining relevant Lab. records and documents for disposal of wastes, and ensuring compliance with ISO 9001 : 2000. etc,

2 WORK CONTACTS.

Internally : Regular contacts with Shift Controller, Shift Engineer, Production Planning Engineers, Process Engineers, Marine Coordinator, Process, Utility, Sulphur Terminal and Oil Movement Supervisors and Marine Supervisors to coordinate sampling, vessels loading/discharging products, quality certification activities and reporting of tests results.

Frequent contacts with stores personnel, to obtain equipment and materials needed for testing.

Occasional contacts with Maintenance Department personnel for instrument repairs.

Externally: Regular contacts with third party inspectors to witness tests carried out for product certification and certifying retention samples.

4. INDEPENDENCE OF OPERATION

Reports to Senior Lab. Chemist or Lab. Chemist, Performs highly analytical work within the framework of established procedures and quality control standards. Work is subjected to review.

5. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY.

Gives work direction to assigned Laboratory Technicians and Sample Collectors.

6. PHYSICAL EFFORT.

Slight to moderate physical effort. Work involves walking and standing, whilst performing tests, setting up instruments and sampling and testing at the units for 70% of the work time. Occasional lifting and carrying of equipment.

7. WORK ENVIRONMENT.

Exposed to hazardous, harmful and toxic chemicals and petroleum products of which some are carcinogenic and lethal, obnoxious toxic gases and fumes for most of the work time.
