Bhubaneswar: Students of Rama Devi Women’s university, who were confined during Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s visit to the varsity for its inaugural function two days ago, on Saturday moved the Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) and later filed a police complaint against four persons in connection with the incident.

The written complaint was filed at the Sahid Nagar police against the university officer on special duty (OSD), registrar and PG Council Chairman and the police officer on duty during the incident. They were accompanied by some Congress leaders.

Earlier in the day, the students also submitted a memorandum to the Commission requesting to initiate action against those responsible for their ordeal.

The students urged the Commission to intervene in the matter and direct the State government to explain the reasons for their confinement during the chief minister’s programme on December 3.

“It is disheartening that the students of the university were detained by the college authorities when it was celebrating its foundation day. It is even more shameful that the OSD of the institution has not even bothered to talk to us and discuss the matter,” rued a student.

“We can’t understand what is stopping them from discussing the issue with us. Are we not students?” askied another student.

In another development in the case, the Odisha State Commission for Women has sought report from university OSD and Police Commissioner within seven days.
