The Rick Violette trained Upstart was the big mover this week in early Kentucky Derby betting odds after winning last Saturday’s $400,000 Holy Bull (G2) at Gulfstream Park.

The son of Flatter went into the Holy Bull at future Derby betting odds of 33/1 but has been bet down to 16/1 this week at Bovada, good for co-fourth choice in the wagering.

The ridgling was making his three-year-old debut in the Holy Bull and sent off as a 2/1 second choice. He drew off to win by 5½ lengths over the betting favorite Frosted.

He earned 10 points as the Holy Bull is part of the Road to the Derby points series. That puts him third in the standings with 16 points. He earned four points for his runner up finish in the Champagne (G1) last October at Belmont Park and two points for his third place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1).

Leading the Derby points race is El Kabeir with 21. The John Terranova trainee won the Kentucky Jockey Club (G2) and Jerome (G3) in his last two starts, picking up 10 points for each win. He earned one point for his fourth place finish in the Champagne last fall. The colt is currently at early Derby betting odds of 16/1.

The co-favorites for the Run for the Roses at Bovada are American Pharoah and Dortmund at 10/1. American Pharoah won the Del Mar Futurity (G1) and Frontrunner (G1) last fall but was forced to miss the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile with a foot issue.

Dortmund, a son of 2008 Kentucky Derby winner Big Brown, is undefeated in three starts, winning the Los Alamitos Futurity (G1) in his last outing on Dec. 20.

Next at 12/1 remains Texas Red, who pulled off the upset in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.

The betting favorite for the 140th running of the Kentucky Derby remains California Chrome, who is currently listed at 5/2 at Bovada.

With just over $200,000 wagered on-track at Churchill Downs on Friday, the colt was at 3/1, but his price figures to drift down slightly as we get closer to post time. In the meantime, value bettors were backing Wicked Strong, whose line was shrinking during the day (down to 15/2 by midday).

If the wagers continue to come in on the colt, he figures to be the shortest priced Kentucky Derby favorite since Big Brown, who won the 2008 Run for the Roses at 2.40/1. Trained by Rick Dutrow, Big Brown went on to win the Preakness Stakes two weeks later, but came up short in his Triple Crown bid, getting eased in the Belmont Stakes.

Back in February after winning the California Cup Derby, the betting odds on California Chrome was 60/1. The colt had done his best work beating up on state breds, his only graded stakes attempt a sixth place finish in the Del Mar Futurity (G1) last September.

That changed on March 8 as the colt took the field gate to wire to win the San Felipe (G2), earning the top Beyer Speed Figure (108) of any Derby candidate, a number that still is the highest number earned by any of the 19 that will go in the gate today.

After the race his early Derby betting price at Bovada dropped to 7/1 and the secret was out - this colt was going to be a major player.

The colt solidified his Derby favorite status with a sharp win in the Santa Anita Derby (G1), drawing away to win by 5 ¼ lengths, earning a 107 Beyer Speed Figure. The win drove his price down to 3/1, and we have seen it as low as 21/10 just a couple of days ago.

Will California Chrome win the Derby and go on to win the Triple Crown? Bovada has set the odds of any horse winning the Triple Crown at 6/1 and has a wide variety of prop bets and matchup bets for the Run for the Roses.

The betting price on California Chrome dropped again on Friday afternoon just 24 hours before the 140th running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs.

In the latest odds released by Bovada the Art Sherman trainee is now down to betting odds of 21/10. On April 28 horse bettors could have locked in 5/2 on the colt. Part of the drop in price is due to the fact that Hoppertunity was scratched on Thursday due to a foot bruise. The colt was at betting odds of 8/1 at the time of the scratch.

Trainer Wesley Ward announced that Pablo Del Monte, who was on the also-eligible list and at odds of 50/1, will bypass the Run for the Roses and look for an easier spot. That means there will be 19 runners in this year’s race.

With the low price on California Chrome, horse bettors will start gravitating to others seeking more value. Danza and Wicked Strong are currently co-second choices at 8/1 in Derby betting.

Danza is coming off an upset win in the Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park in his last start. The colt is one of four that will be saddled by top trainer Todd Pletcher. The barn’s other runners are We Miss Artie (33/1), Vinceremos (50/1), and Intense Holiday (8/1).

Vinceremos is sharing the biggest price in the betting with Harry’s Holiday, the duo both outrun in their final Derby prep in the Toyota Blue Grass over polytrack at Keeneland.

In addition to straight win wagers on the Kentucky Derby, Bovada is also offering a wide variety of prop bets on the race. For a complete list click here.

Favored on the odds to win the Kentucky Derby, California Chrome drew the No. 5 post position on Wednesday for Saturday's 140th edition of the Run for the Roses.

California Chrome is listed as the 11/4 favorite on the latest Kentucky Derby odds at Bovada. Danza and Hoppertunity, who both sat at 8/1 on the odds to win the Kentucky Derby late on Wednesday night, drew the No. 4 post and the No. 11 post, respectively, for Saturday's Triple Crown race.

However, Hoppertunity was scratched from the race on Thursday morning due to a foot problem, which will change up the Kentucky Derby lines at the sportsbooks (watch for updates).

The early betting price on California Chrome rose this week in the latest Kentucky Derby betting odds released by Bovada.

Last week the Santa Anita Derby (G1) winner dropped to a low of 7/4 as horse bettors jumped on the colt’s bandwagon in droves. The price has drifted up so far this week on the colt, who is currently the early favorite at Kentucky Derby odds of 11/4 at Bovada.

Trained by Art Sherman, the colt will be ridden by Victor Espinoza, who booted home War Emblem to win his first Kentucky Derby in 2002.

Remaining the second choice in the early Derby betting is Wicked Strong, who went from 13/2 last week to 7/1 this week. The colt won the Wood Memorial (G1) at Aqueduct in his last outing, beating the previously undefeated Samraat, who is listed at 16/1 for the Run for the Roses.

The Todd Pletcher trained Danza is the third choice in the betting at 9/1. The colt pulled off the huge upset in the Arkansas Derby, returning his backers $84.60 for a $2 wager. Pletcher has won the Eclipse Award for outstanding trainer six times, but has a mediocre record of 1 for 36 in the Kentucky Derby. His lone winner was with Super Saver in 2010.

Pletcher will also saddle Intense Holiday (18/1), We Miss Artie (40/1) and Vinceremos (50/1).

Hoppertunity is the fourth choice in the early betting at 10/1. The colt finished 5¼ lengths behind California Chrome in a runner up finish in the Santa Anita Derby. The colt is trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, who has won the Kentucky Derby three times, but not since War Emblem pulled off the upset in 2002.

Baffert will also send out Sunland Derby (G3) winner Chitu, who is currently listed at 33/1 odds.

Entries and post positions will be drawn on Wednesday, April 30 at 5:00 pm (ET). For full card selections for both Oaks Day and Derby Day, check out Michael Dempsey at turfnsport.com.

Santa Anita Derby (G1) winner California Chrome continues to be the solid betting favorite for the 140th running of the Kentucky Derby with a week to go, dipping to 5/2 in the latest odds released by Bovada.

Trained by Art Sherman, the son of Lucky Pulpit has won six of his 10 career starts for earnings of $1,134,850 and landed on top of the 2014 Kentucky Derby Points Standings.

Six of his first eight career starts came against California breds, but stepping out of the state bred ranks posed no problem as he won the San Felipe (G2) on March 6 followed by his Santa Anita Derby win on April 5.

In 2012 I’ll Have Another parlayed a win in the Santa Anita Derby into a victory in the Kentucky Derby.

After the Derby favorite the field is wide open, with Wood Memorial (G1) winner Wicked Strong and Arkansas Derby (G1) winner Danza next at 13/2 and 9/1, respectively, in Derby betting odds provided by Bovada.

Entries will be drawn on Wednesday, April 30, and it appears we will have a full field of 20. The horses sitting outside the top 20 in the Derby points standings still hoping to get into the field include Commanding Curve, Pablo Del Monte, Bayern and Social Inclusion.

The Kentucky Derby lost a major player this week as the Todd Pletcher trained Constitution was declared out of the Triple Crown races with a fractured cannon bone. After his win in the Florida Derby (G1) on March 29 his price in future wagering had dropped to 8/1 at Bovada.

The defection means Wood Memorial (G1) fifth place finisher Uncle Sigh will make it into the Kentucky Derby field. The Gary Contessa trainee is currently listed at 40/1 at Bovada in Kentucky Derby futures wagering.

Santa Anita Derby (G1) winner California Chrome continues to be the betting favorite, down to 2/1. The colt was listed at 3/1 last week according to prices released by Bovada.

Danza dropped down to 8/1 after his upset victory in the Arkansas Derby (G1) at Oaklawn Park last Saturday. The Pletcher trainee paid $84.60. The colt ran third against first level optional claimers on March 1 in his three-year-old debut.

Pletcher will be loaded for the Run for the Roses despite the scratch of Constitution. In addition to Danza he will saddle Intense Holiday (20/1), We Miss Artie (33/1) and possibly Vinceremos, who is currently in 21st in the Kentucky Derby Points Standings and would be the next in the field if there is another defection.

Among those on the fence that have enough points include Toyota Blue Grass (G1) winner Dance With Fate, who may stay on polytrack and turf, and Midnight Hawk, who is entered in Saturday’s Illinois Derby (G3).

Trainer Graham Motion may not go forward with Ring Weekend, who was second in the Calder Derby on April 5.

With just three weeks to go before the 140th running of the Kentucky Derby (G1), California Chrome has been bet down to the 3-1 favorite for the Run for the Roses at Bovada. The Art Sherman trainee was an impressive winner of the Santa Anita Derby (G1) in his last outing.

California Chrome is the leader in the 2014 Kentucky Derby Points Standings with 150 points and looks likely to be the betting favorite when the gate opens on the first Saturday of May.

There are two major Derby preps coming up on Saturday, the $750,000 Toyota Blue Grass (G1) at Keeneland and the $1 million Arkansas Derby (G1). Each race will award 100-40-20-10 points to the top four finishers. It appears it will take between 20 and 30 points to get into the starting gate at Churchill Downs.

One leading Derby contender that is on the outside looking in is the Bob Baffert trained Bayern, the 2-1 second choice on the morning line in the Arkansas Derby. The colt is currently listed at 16-1 at Bovada in Kentucky Derby future wagering, but has no points. The colt needs a top two finish to assure a starting spot at Churchill Downs.

Bobby’s Kitten is the 3-1 morning line favorite in the Toyota Blue Grass but also has no points. The colt has raced exclusively on turf in his career which includes a win in the Pilgrim (G3) and a third in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1). The colt is currently listed at 30-1 at Bovada for the Kentucky Derby.

Indy opened at Bovada as a 10/1 favorite to win the next Run for the Roses, ahead of other impressive two-year-olds New Years Day (15/1) and Havana (20/1).

The quality of the horses is matched by the size of the Kentucky Derby odds posted by Bovada, who have listed 237 horses as possible winners. Check out the full list of early 2014 Derby odds.

Betting on the Kentucky Derby is the biggest wagering day of the year right behind Super Bowl Sunday, so it’s small wonder that racebooks offer so many types of horse racing odds on the First Saturday in May.

There are bigger horse racing events, such as the Breeders' Cup, but no single event attracts more mainstream wagering interest than the Run for the Roses.

And the Kentucky Derby odds go up well before May as there are tons of Derby futures offered by most top racebooks. So in early January, there will be a list of 40 three-year-old horses who are considered favorites to win the Derby.

During February, March, and April the horse racing calendar is filled with key races, known as ‘Derby preps’, where the top horses compete and try to earn a spot in the field of 20.

Early odds for the 2013 Kentucky Derby at Bovada have Flashback and Itsmyluckyday both listed at 10/1 to win the Run for the Roses, with Verrazano and Violence both at 12/1, and Revolutionary at 14/1. Shanghai Bobby is back at 16/1 on the Kentucky Derby odds.

In 2012, oddsmakers set early favorite Union Rags at 11/1 on the odds to win the Kentucky Derby, with no other horse better than 20/1 odds. That includes Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner Hansen. The juvenile race features the best two-year-old horses and helps generate the prospect list for the Derby and other Triple Crown races. Union Rags finished a close second back in October and is clearly considered the early front runner.
