Happy May Day! It’s spring and there are so many special outdoor events to celebrate. I am especially excited by the Spring Faire at the Environmental Nature Center in Newport Beach that marks the opening of the Butterfly House. So much to do and explore with these events in Orange County!
Each week I will highlight library storytimes and family activities in a different city. Be on the look out for your hometown! This week I will feature the San Juan Capistrano Library, a branch of the OC Public Library System.

Friday, May 2 – a day before the facility kicks off its 2014 season. The fun-filled free event is from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the City of Aliso Viejo Aquatic Center, located at 29 Santa Barbara Drive.
The Open House will showcase the upcoming swim season and will give folks the chance to register for summer programs. Premier Recreation will host water games and provide free group swim lessons. Premier’s swim coach and instructors will give kids a chance to participate in a sample swim team workout.
The Open House will also feature information about the center’s swim team, swim lessons, learn-to-swim program, and health and safety programs. Premier Recreation Services will raffle off a number of free programs to folks in attendance. Seasonal, monthly and family passes will also be available.
The event is the perfect opportunity for people to see all that the Aquatic Center offers while having fun.

Come explore the beauty in Black Star Canyon! Hours are 8am – 2pm. Registration required – driving directions will be provided once you register. Enjoy self-guided access in magnificent Black Star and Baker Canyons. Designated trails will be open for self-guided hiking, biking, and equestrian use for all you trail lovers! Parking is limited.
Carpooling is strongly encouraged. All participants MUST check in and complete their registration at the Baker Staging Area prior to accessing the trail system. If you are found to be on the trails without a day use pass you will be immediately directed back to the staging area.
Trail routes vary in distance and level of difficulty. Please plan accordingly. Choices range from easy 30-minute walks to strenuous 7+-mile cardio hikes. Participants are required to stay on designated trails at all times. In addition to being a rare and sensitive habit, the Irvine Ranch Open Space is under strict protection. There are often unseen dangers just off-trail including, but not limited to: mountain lions, poison oak, ticks, poisonous spiders, and venomous snakes. OC Rangers may issue citations for visitors found off-trail.
There are other activities nestled within Wilderness Access Day that you and your family and friends can enjoy. There is a Children’s Activity station set up for youngsters that may include crafts, games and storytelling! Also, there is a separate interpretive program that is guided by an IRC-Certified volunteer. If interested in joining this program, please register at www.LetsGoOutside.org/activities and click under “Wilderness Access Day – Guided Walk.” You will need to sign in on both rosters upon your arrival if you choose to enjoy the trails before or after the guided walk. On-site registration is available the day of the event.
