This weekend is off and poppin’ with Sheila E. droppin’ those beats for a three night stint at Yoshi’s in Oakland. If you have never had the opportunity to see this legendary artist do her magic on the drums I highly suggest you get off your couch and get your tickets before they are gone. I have had several opportunities to see Sheila E. live, once at the Prince concert at the Oracle arena several years ago. She is absolutely MESMERIZING to watch and she will get you out of your seat groovin’ in a matter of minutes.
Beyond that there are some great events happening this weekend– Queendom at the Betti Ono Gallery, Fero at the Legionnaire, Skin at Parliament, to name a very few. Punk rockers, riot grrls, and simple, artsy freaks suddenly had a heroine to look up to and a mecca to head toward. This highly anticipated film adaptation of Valencia gives a whole new generation of fabulous, artsy, genderqueer folks an opportunity to reinterpret and reinvent the tales of this iconic novel one chapter at a time.
Valencia lives on the same edge as its characters, by taking an anthology structure; each chapter is told by a different director and cast, and each “Michelle” conveys a different element or feel of the story and the community. The “Michelles” come in every shape, race, style, and gender—and by the end of the film, the wide swath of performances come together showing how “Michelle” and the stories of Valencia itself represent a universal experience. From falling in love to bonding with your exes’ exes, the film captures a moment in time in San Francisco, while also capturing the universal experience of being young, heartbroken, and ecstatic, and discovering the magic of who you are — all at once.

Sheila Escovedo picked up the drumsticks and started making music at the precocious age of three. Sheila delivered her first solo performance to a live audience two years later and has since established herself as one of the most talented percussionist/drummers and performers in the world. Best known to music fans as Sheila E., she became a top session and touring musician before the age of 20, performing and/or recording with George Duke, Herbie Hancock, Billy Cobham, Con Funk Shun, Marvin Gaye (on his final world tour), Diana Ross, Lionel Richie, Gloria Estefan, Patti LaBelle, and Steve Nicks among others.
In recent years, Sheila E. has served as drummer of Ringo Starr All Star Band, musical director for the likes of Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce’ Knowles, and Prince. Her producing, arranging, and performance talents have been showcased on the Latin Grammy Awards, Summer Olympics, WOW Awards, ALMA’s, The Image Awards and the 2012 Academy Awards. In 2010 Sheila was nominated for an Emmy Award for “Outstanding Music Direction” in recognition for her leadership as musical director for President Obama’s Performance at The White House: Fiesta Latina. Her current project, The E Family, with her father Pete Escovedo, and brothers Juan and Peter Michael Escovedo, has been very well received and is receiving airplay and appreciation nationwide

From the minute you walk in this corner joint in downtown Oakland you know you stepped into a special place. The decor is casually cool, the staff understated friendly and the smells emanating from the kitchen are subtly spicy. We opted to sit by a window as the last strains of the sun wafted through so we could do a little people watching while we perused the menu. This was my first time eating there so I spent quite a bit of time reading all that Hawker Fare had to offer. I am an EXTREMELY picky eater but was lucky enough to have a dining companion who had eaten there several times before and made really great suggestions for our meal.
We started with a plate of blistered green beans. Yes, it is true I have been on a bit of a green bean kick as of late. I am consistently amazed at how tasty they are cooked in the correct sauce and spices. These green beans are tossed in a curry paste with pork bacon and dried shrimp. I cannot begin to describe the level of yum this dish inspires. It is all at once sweet and spicy with a good solid crunch. I recommend that no matter what else you dine on at Hawker Fare ALWAYS make this a staple of your meal, you won’t regret it!
Next up was the Satay Beef Short Ribs, braised in a coconut milk to tender perfection. These were a nice size serving for two people and just garlicky enough to give them some ooomph but not so garlicky that you can give your girlfriend/boifriend a quick smooch at the table. This dish is not very saucy although its tenderness does hint that at some point it was marinated quite generously. It went well with the sticky rice we had and its flavor was mellow but pleasing.
The star of the night, hands down was the Fried Chicken. You can pick regular or spicy but, as you can probably guess, we went all in and asked for the spiciest they could give us. We were not disappointed. These morsels of pure heaven came to the table and you could smell the spice as it was coming down the aisle. They were glazed with a sauce I could not quite figure out but suffice it to say the sauce only added to the tastiness. Each bite was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, the sign of any good piece of fried chicken.
I thoroughly enjoyed my meal at Hawker Fare and I think you will too. One word of caution, you need to be a slightly adventurous diner to try some of the other items on the menu, but even if you aren’t the adventurous type you will find something on the menu that you will love!
