Oh Bay Area, the nights are starting earlier, the chill is in the air, sweaters, scarves and quirky coats are about to be de riguer. Miz Chris [MC]: Where are you from?
Tina D’Elia [TD]: I grew up in Lincoln, Massachusetts and lived in Boston before moving to the Bay Area 14 years ago. My Dad is from the east coast, he’s Italian, my Mom grew up in Cali, Columbia and she is Mexican and German.
[MC]: How did you start your career in theater?
[TD]: I started in the early 90’s I had always acted in school or wrote. Yet when I finished college I started to do more performance poetry, poetry slams, and started working in professional theater and working on writing one-woman shows and performing them as well.
[MC]: Tell us the history behind your one woman show coming up this weekend “The Rita Hayworth of this Generation”
[TD]: I wrote a screenplay short and a short story called “The Lost Black Jack King in My Eyes” in Best Lesbian Erotica 2004 and it won a LAMBDA 
award for best anthology that year. I developed “The Rita Hayworth of this Generation” with two characters further “Carmelita and Jesus” by performing a duet piece at “Fresh Meat Performance” 2003. In 2010, I performed the first workshop performance of my show at The Garage with Joe Landini and two director coaches Mary Guzmán and Katie Rubin. I developed my Rita show from there at The Marsh, taking classes with David Ford. I then started working with Mary Guzman as my solo director and we presented one night at The Brava in 2011 to a sold-out standing ovation audience. This run will be my second one in San Francisco. I did a three-week run last year at Shotwell Studios, March-April 2012 and after the success of that show, both my director and I Mary Guzmán knew this show had more work to do. The Marsh presented “The Rita Hayworth of this Generation” as a “Marsh Rising Star” last October 2012. This week I’m so proud to say that I really love how the writing and working with all the fantastic artists has gotten this show to a place that is really exciting. The last two years I got to work with incredible artists creating original music, song, and new movement/dance piece.
[MC]: What can the audience expect from show?
[TD]: One performer being 5 people and most of the time two people are talking to each other. Whether it’s loving, laughing, fighting, or having sex. This show involves a lot of space object work; there are no props so the world gets created before the audience by the solo performer.
Since this show is set in Las Vegas and folks are seeking fame, power, love, and money we see how each character struggles, rises, and falls as they strive to get what they want or need. This is a major Dramadey with a bit of a film-noir twist so the audience will be sheer to be entertained!
[MC]: What are your future plans after the show finishes its run?
[TD]: Yes, I am excited to work with a Bay Area Theater that would be interested in producing or co-producing this show. I want to find finish one original song/Big Band Number to include in this show so I’ll be seeking more funding and also interviewing Theater Producers to produce for my next run. I’m excited also take this show to other cities, colleges, and venues.

Poet Denise Jolly and her be Beautiful Project have caught on across the Internet recently. She’s been interviewed across North America and as well as in Australia. In 2013 she ranked 5th in the Women of the World Poetry Slam, was the 2009 San Francisco Grand Slam Champion and member of the 2009 San Francisco Slam team who ranked 3rd in the nation. Denise has taught and performed at colleges, universities, community centers, public and private schools all over the United States. Working with student populations in elementary through college and beyond. She likes doing great things with amazing people and being moved by art, community and how the two work together.
