Hello YaY! Area I have been gone too long.  Last week was San Francisco Pride and I was out all week getting ready for EDEN in the Bay.  It was a fabulous four day weekend with 8 events featuring Grammy Award Winning Artist EVE (click here for video)!!!   It was truly a magical weekend.  Now I am back in the East Bay ready to serve up some weekend goodness to all of you!

The East Bay is bursting at the seams with interesting and wonderful things to do.  Don’t forget that this Friday is First Fridays in Oakland.  I know you’re tired from Pride but if you can muster up the stamina I highly recommend you make it out for a night of revelry and debauchery.

Read on and happy 4th of July!

This LGBT History month, we are celebrating the centenarian Ruth Ellis by screening Living with Pride – Ruth Ellis @ 100 (TBC),

In this charming documentary, Ruth Ellis, a 100-year-old African American lesbian, recounts her life. As a lesbian academic interviewed in the documentary puts it, “Ruth is a gift to us” as she is able to tell what it was like to suffer “triple oppression, being a woman, being black, and being a lesbian.”

Ellis tells about discovering her sexuality some 80 years ago, and when discussing her romantic involvements (which included one relationship lasting 35 years), she is utterly honest. At one point she is even asked about the last time she had sex, and she replies it was when she was 95, adding with a laugh, “that was a one-night stand.” A businesswoman, Ellis lived openly as a lesbian and often played host for an active social circle of gays and lesbians in Detroit at a time when mainstream America scarcely acknowledged the existence of the community. The film is illustrated with vintage photographs of Ellis, her family, lovers, and friends, and footage shot in the present day shows her at dance class, having fun at her favorite bowling alley, and shooting pool with friends. This is an engaging look at a special character, a woman who was always true to herself. –Robert J. McNamara

This event will also celebrate the launch of THE POSTWOMAN MOVIE (2014), a dramatic LGBT love story written and directed by J.D. Walker, about struggling single mom forced to confront her husband, dysfunctional family, and children about her secret life with another woman. Walker is the winner of the Sundance pitching contest and currently organizing a Kickstarter campaign for THE POSTWOMAN. Find out more here: http://kck.st/15IhO4r

–that lasts 24 hrs:: milongas, workshops, live-music performances and merrymaking :: July 6th-7thOn a midsummer’s night, soon after the longest day of the year, we will gather for queer tango merrymaking worthy of the solstice. Our traveling Puck, Gwen Spinks* from Queer Tango Canada, will take us deep into tango revelry that dips and turns, sleeps, and rises again, for 24 hrs: milongas, workshops, performances and every shade of magic.

This is our Summer Event!July 6th-7th (see below for new additional dates!)

PLUS a short, but oh so very sweet, live set of tango songs by Gigi Gamble and a guest guitarist.

Sunday July 7th :: Workshops :: 2-6 pm

Lake Merritt Dance Center at 200 Grand Ave in Oakland. MPR.

First workshop: 1.5 hours, 2-3:30 pm

From the floor Up. “By understanding what you are doing – you can do what you want” … this workshop will focus on styling – how balance and moving from the core affect our fluidity and stability.

Second workshop: half hour, 3:45-4:15 pm

Feldenkrais for dancers – we will do a quick version of “posture from head to toe” this workshop is about understanding how we hold our bodies in the dance.

Third workshop: 1.5 hours, 4:30-6 pm

Mechanics to Emotions – what is between you and that Tango High – we all talk about that tango high – the connection – but how do we create it on the dance floor – how to connect the mechanics to the emotions. We recommend that dancers take all 3 workshops as concepts will build throughout the day—and we’ve schedule in rest breaks with refreshments lovely—but, it’s certainly not mandatory, and each can be taken as a stand alone class.

Sunday July 7th :: Sunset Fairy Milonga :: 7-10 pm

DJ, sweet and savory yum yums and a fairy good time for all.
