2013-07-24

I love Bay Summers.  Not too hot (in the 100s in my home state of Texas), lots of outdoor festivals to enjoy and the nightlife is bumpin’ each night.  Just a head’s up I have ONE event that is in Sacramento, not technically the Bay Area but it’s BRUNO MARS!  Ok, back to our regularly scheduled programming.  This week I interview one of my FAVORITE female DJs in the Bay, DJ Lady Fingaz.  I got turned on to her by Aima the Dreamer several months ago and she continues to blow me away.  I am serious!  If you haven’t seen this BAWSE on the turntables you are missing out!  Check out my interview about her upcoming EP Release Party.  The check out all the fabulousity that is happening this weekend!

DJ Lady Fingaz

Miz Chris [MC]:  Where are you from?

DJ Lady Fingaz [LF]:  Well I am an Austin Texas native, spent my informative years in Little Rock, AR and moved here from New Orleans!

Miz Chris [MC]:  When did you start in djing and then producing original music?  What do you love about it?

DJ Lady Fingaz [LF]:  I’ve been djing for 12 years producing for 8 years.  What drew me to djing originally was turntablism.  Turntablism enthralled me because you could be any instrument or sound, be a one-woman show, or a member of a band.   Scratching and beat juggling was all I wanted to learn when I bought my first pair of turns.  Later I learned mixing and the art of moving the crowd which is a whole other joy I get from djing.  Production is a natural  progression for djs so I fell right into it.  Being a vocalist and a turntablist, production was yet another outlet that I could use to incorporate my other passions so I immediately fell in love with making beats!

Miz Chris [MC]:  What, if any, difficulties have you faced as a female DJ?

DJ Lady Fingaz

DJ Lady Fingaz [LF]:  Being a woman in a predominantly male dominated industry has its setbacks and benefits.  In some instances, you intimidate males just for being a woman. They might instantly underestimate you which is then the point in which you flex your skills and let them know you are not to be toyed with.  On the other hand it can help you get a foot in the door, but this all must be backed up  by real skill! In the past few years I have seen an increase in women entering the DJ scene and it’s changing the industry for the better in my humble opinion!

Miz Chris [MC]:  This Friday you are releasing a new EP alongside La Femme Deadly Venoms.   Tell my readers a little bit of what to expect from the EPs and from the event.

La Femme Deadly Venoms

DJ Lady Fingaz [LF]:  My all lady crew La Femme Deadly Venoms includes DJs, producers and musicians in a sweet gumbo of Hip-Hop, Funk, Soul, Jazz and Electro with vocals, three turntables, three mixers, drum machines and keys. Our EP and show will reflect the same.  The music is diverse with lush beats, turntablism, souful vocals and at the show this Friday LFDV will be performing with guest emcees Aima the Dreamer and CMG alongside heavy weight DJs Mista-B, Snayk Eyez and Andre hosted by the infamous Z-Man.  My EP is a mix of hip-hop and electronica featuring guest MCs, live musicians and all my original production, cuts and vocals sure to please the eardrums!

Miz Chris [MC]:  You roll deep with an all female DJ crew.  Tell us what you love about working with the astounding and talented group of women.

DJ Lady Fingaz EP Release

DJ Lady Fingaz [LF]:  Yes indeed I do!  Being in a male dominated industry it’s always been refreshing to work alongside a crew of women that can relate and uplift one another.  There’s an unspoken sisterhood that has always been present for me when I hooked up with the right bunch of gals and when it occurs the music process is so beautiful and right on!  I love working with anyone skilled and motivated but I do especially love working with my ladies!

About BRUNO MARS:

Bruno Mars is undoubtedly among contemporary pop music’s most gifted and compelling artists. And with global sales currently certified at 40x-platinum and over 50 million singles sold worldwide, the 14-time Grammy Award nominee has fully proven himself as a true superstar. Released in October 2010, ?DOO-WOPS & HOOLIGANS” was greeted with both popular success and critical acclaim from all corners of the globe. Fueled by a remarkable string of hit singles, including the multi-platinum #1 smashes, “Just The Way You Are” and “Grenade,” the album instantly confirmed Mars as a major force in modern pop music. Mars recently led a breathtaking performance on the 55th Annual Grammy Awards fronting an all-star tribute to Bob Marley alongside the likes of Sting and Rihanna, which marked the Grammy-winner’s third consecutive year to perform on the acclaimed show. As its title suggests, “UNORTHODOX JUKEBOX” once again sees Mars melding a multitude of musical approaches to create his own distinctive sound.

She emulates a performance strength that will grab hold of you and make you submit.
