Driver fatally shot in Brooklyn because of personal feud, police say: The homeless services van driver shot and killed in Brooklyn Monday was targeted in a personal feud that had boiled over, the NYPD’s Chief of Detectives said, the Daily News reports. He worked for Women in Need, Inc., a nonprofit run by former City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, who said Henry was transporting a client to an appointment to complete a housing application.

HeartShare St. Vincent’s sends 50 young people in foster care to college:
HeartShare St. Vincent’s Services is sending a record 50 young people in foster care to college this fall through its American Dream Program. The agency aims to send 100 scholars to college by 2020. ADP is a wrap-around educational, emotional support and career advancement program that empowers older youth to overcome their personal challenges and excel. Since its inception in 1997, the privately funded program has changed the lives of over 100 young men and women, who have graduated from prestigious schools with degrees in law, medicine and finance.
Governor Cuomo announces support for nutritional and health services for older New Yorkers:
Governor Cuomo announced $74.6 million in state and federal funding for New York's 59 county-based area agencies on aging to support programs that improve older individuals' access to nutritional and disease prevention services. These services currently help more than 238,000 older New Yorkers prevent or reduce the effect of chronic disease associated with diet and weight; strengthen the link between nutrition and physical activity for a healthy lifestyle; and improve access to nutritional information, education, counseling, and healthy foods. This year's commitment will generate an additional $98.3 million in funding from municipalities, plus an additional $11.5 million in direct voluntary contributions from program participants. * People familiar with the matter said the New York City Department of Investigation is probing a 1.2 million dollar contract with a company providing special operations training to correction officers on Rikers Island, the Journal reports.
* At a state Senate hearing, Hoosick Falls residents raised concerns about why it took so long for the government to act on the village’s polluted water, while state officials said related federal guidelines were confusing and inconsistent, the New York Times reports.
* In a move that expands the rights of same-sex couples, the New York State Court of Appeals ruled that a caretaker who is not related to or the adoptive guardian of a child can still be permitted to ask for custody and visitation rights, the Times reports.

25-cent chocolate milk continues to delight generations of New York State fairgoers: For just one quarter, attendees at the Great New York State Fair can buy seven ounces of delicious milk at the Dairy Products Building right on the Fairgrounds. Inside the building, the milk is available for purchase at what is commonly known as the milk bar, The Daily Orange writes. The milk has been sold from inside that building since 1952 and is operated by a nonprofit organization, New York State Dairy Exhibits Inc.
An election-themed haunted house is coming to NYC to terrify us all: Doomocracy, the latest commission from the New York-based arts nonprofit Creative Time, runs through Halloween, the Observer reports. It includes a series of immersive performances and environments promises to bring to life the horrifying realities of the 2016 presidential election, genetically modified foods, all powerful corporations, inescapable surveillance and the collapse of the biosphere.
Bed-Stuy residents tell city to stop 'dumping' homeless shelters there: Bedford-Stuyvesant residents and business leaders are rallying against a proposed drop-in center for homeless people on Bedford Avenue that they say will be a magnet for trouble, Gothamist reports. The new facility would be less than a block from an elementary school in a district that currently contains 13 shelters, and some argue that this latest proposal - in a zip code that is three quarters African American - is further evidence of the city's tendency to concentrate social services facilities in minority neighborhoods.

Multifaith Alliance aids Syrian refugees: Fueled by her own personal experiences, in 2013, Georgette Bennett founded the Multifaith Alliance for Syrian Refugees in 2013, a project of the Tanenbaum Center for Interreligious Understanding in cooperation with the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, according to a press release. MFA is the nation’s leading interfaith response to the worst humanitarian tragedy since World War II. Its list of participating organizations includes Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Sikh, Hindu, Buddhist and other major faith-based organizations. MFA’s mission is to mobilize global multifaith support to alleviate the Syrian humanitarian crisis, heighten awareness of the growing dangers of complacency and advance future stability in the region.
