Queens Assemblyman Andrew Hevesi pushing to have the homeless swap shelters for rent subsidies: The chairman of the state Assembly Social Services Committee has begun quietly pushing a plan he says would reduce reliance on homeless shelters by creating a new rent subsidy to keep people in their homes, the Daily News writes. The plan by Assemblyman Andrew Hevesi, dubbed Home Stability Support, would cost the state and federal governments a combined 450 million dollars a year.
Study shows board chairs mostly unprepared to lead: Nonprofit boards have placed a focus on leadership training and succession planning for organizational executives in recent years, the NonProfit Times writes. But, board chairs themselves might be in need of some on-the-job training. Alliance for Nonprofit Management surveyed board chairs from 635 organizations to determine what prepared for them for their service as board chair and their role and relationship with the organization’s CEO, fellow board members and community. The results, according to the survey, show a need for succession planning, board chair training and divvying up of duties.
Long Island abuse case reveals risks of out-of-state foster care: The case of Cesar Gonzales-Mugaburu, who is in jail awaiting trial on charges of sexually abusing five of his adopted sons and endangering the welfare of two foster children, prompted questions about why it took so long for the alleged abuse to be revealed, the New York Times reports. But it also drew attention to the practice of sending foster children far from the communities they knew - in this case, nearly 3,000 miles - to find a home.
NY Community Trust gives more than $800,000 to bring technology-driven learning to NYC youth: Several foundations are pooling resources to make 13 grants, to help young people use digital media to compose and record original music, advocate for immigrants' rights and push for school discipline reforms, and produce documentary films, Philanthropy New York reports. The money is the latest in $8 million in grants in six years for students' digital media projects from the Hive Digital Media Learning Fund.
Taking advocacy campaigns off auto-pilot: A lack of creativity in campaign tech can stifle social change, so advocacy organizations need to take more chances with technology and think beyond existing tools to achieve greater impact, according to the Stanford Social Innovation Review.
Find any of New York City's 440 high schools with new online search tool: City schools boss Carmen Fariña unveiled NYC School Finder, a new, online tool that lets users search and sort through the city’s 440 high schools by keyword, location, size, and more, the Daily News writes. The nonprofit Fund for the Public schools funded most of the $350,000 development cost for the new tool created by the city DOE in collaboration with the Mayor’s Office of Technology and Innovation and private web developer Pivotal Labs. The city funded the remainder of the project.

New York State announces the launch of a new website to advance connections between the state and the nonprofit sector:
The New York State Division of the Budget announced the launch of a new website which will enhance the relationship between New York State government and nonprofit organizations. The website will serve as New York’s preeminent source for information impacting the nonprofit sector and as a portal to streamline the myriad interactions between the State and its nonprofit partners. New York’s 100,000 nonprofit organizations account for more than 18 percent of all private sector jobs in New York State, employing more than 1.25 million New Yorkers. Nonprofits do vital work on behalf of New York State and its residents through more than 6,000 State contracts.
Sanctuary for Families appoints new deputy clinical director:
Jelaine Altino, LCSW, has been appointed Deputy Clinical Director of Residential Services at Sanctuary for Families, a leading service provider and advocate for survivors of domestic violence, sex trafficking and related forms of gender violence, where she will manage Sanctuary’s transitional and crisis shelters, outreach initiatives, post-shelter care and clinical administrative matters. * Police officer Daniel Pantaleo, whose chokehold on Eric Garner in 2014 contributed to his death, has increased his earnings on modified duty, spurring criticism from the Rev. Al Sharpton and City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, Politico New York reports.
* A Nassau legislative committee unanimously approved a contract to hire a health monitor to oversee the jail’s inmate medical provider amid intense criticism of the vendor’s care and its threat of a walkout, Newsday reports.

This company is turning veterans into entrepreneurs: With 200,000 service members coming off duty each year over the next five years, 25 percent of them want to build a business, according to Bunker Labs, a national nonprofit organization built by military veterans to empower other veterans to become business owners, the New York Post reports. Bunker Labs New York recently received $50,000 in prize money as a part of The US Small Business Association’s third annual Growth Accelerator Fund Competition.
Citing opioid crisis In Southern Brooklyn, local Rep pushes for more resources: Assemblywoman Pamela Harris believes the issue of opioid and alcohol addiction is so urgent she and the Assembly’s Democratic Majority Leader Joseph Morelle visited an organization in Sunset Park that provides outpatient services to addicts, the Resource, Training & Counseling Center,according to Sheepshead Bites.
NY-based nonprofit to run Maine's welfare program: Republican Gov. Paul LePage wants to turn over the administration of Maine's $62.5 million welfare program to a New York City-based nonprofit that's faced a dozen state and federal lawsuits since 2013, the Associated Press reports. Fedcap Rehabilitation Services acknowledges its recent litigation in its bid proposal to Maine officials while also describing its accomplishments. Since 2013, it's paid out at least $403,000 in five settlements, the organization says.

SECTOR FOCUS: Environmental Nonprofits
Preserving Eastern Long Island’s land and water:
On Sept. 8, a coalition of civic and environmental groups met on the Peconic Riverfront to advocate for the extension of the Community Preservation Fund,according to the New York League of Conservation Voters. On the backs of ballots this November, East End voters will have the option to vote for or against extending the East End’s 2 percent real estate transfer tax from 2030 to 2050, a tax that goes toward protecting East End communities’ land and water. Paid at the close of the sale of land or property, the tax is collected by Suffolk County and redistributed to that property’s town’s Community Preservation Fund.
Offshore wind alliance Launched in New York: A diverse coalition of organizations, including environmental groups, offshore wind power developers, environmental justice and community advocates, academics, and consultants, with a shared interest in promoting the development of sustainable offshore wind power for New York have joined together to create the New York Offshore Wind Alliance, North American Wind Power writes. According to the group, the new coalition is a project of the Alliance for Clean Energy New York, a nonprofit promoting renewable energy and energy efficiency in New York.
