* EAC Network, in conjunction with the Town of North Hempstead and with funding from Bank of America and the Long Island Community Foundation, announced the launch of the social service agency’s brand new Fresh from the Garden program to provide at-risk seniors in New Cassel, NY with a free, three-step initiative to healthier living: nutrition education, cooking demonstrations, and produce distribution. Seniors who live in communities with few or no grocery stores are more at risk for malnutrition and are more likely to suffer from preventable chronic diseases and poor health conditions. Based at Magnolia Gardens, a senior housing development in New Cassel operated by the North Hempstead Housing Authority, the Fresh from the Garden senior initiative focuses efforts on senior residents both within the development itself and the New Cassel community at large.
* The Jewish Women’s Foundation of New York announces the 2017 Women of the Year to be honored at their Annual Benefit Luncheon on May 15at the St. Regis Hotel NYC: Jean Crystal, Judith Zabar and Francine LeFrak. LeFrak is the founder of Same Sky, a trade initiative that creates employment opportunities for women struggling to lift themselves out of extreme poverty. GRANTS AND FUNDING:
* The New York State Department of Health AIDS Institute announced the availability of funds to support a multi-faceted response to address the impact of HIV/STD/HCV in New York State. The purpose of this funding is to identify service providers to develop and/or enhance comprehensive HIV/STD/HCV programs through the implementation of proven high impact prevention strategies and innovative interventions for HIV positive women and women who engage in high risk behaviors with a focus on women of color. POLITICAL BULLETIN BY CITY & STATE:
* The outside legal defense for the de Blasio administration has cost New York City 10.5 million dollars so far, and might cost millions more, said Zachary Carter, head of the city’s Law Department, Gotham Gazette reports.
* New York City has been largely unsuccessful in gaining full cooperation from the Hasidic community in rooting out mohels involved in neonatal herpes cases, but de Blasio says he still needs to evaluate whether a deal with the community is “working effectively or not,” the Post writes.
* Cuomo's former state operations director and one of the architects of his free college tuition plan said the program would likely see "tweaks" in any number of areas before the final version is created, the Times Union reports.
