De Blasio administration says it is ahead of schedule on affordable housing: Despite skepticism from many housing experts and a feud with the governor that has derailed one of the major programs used to subsidize development, the de Blasio administration announced that it was ahead of schedule in meeting its goals, having financed the creation or preservation of nearly 53,000 affordable apartments so far, the New York Times reports.
Legislators and advocates call for overhaul of Justice Center: A key watchdog group and several members of the state legislature are calling for a complete overhaul of the way New York state handles abuse of people with disabilities, including stripping Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s office of its purview over a troubled agency, Buzzfeed writes. The New York State Justice Center for the Protection of People With Special Needs has shown itself incapable of investigating and prosecuting mistreatment, even in cases of horrific violence, said Disability Rights New York, a nonprofit with a federal mandate to review the Center’s work.
NY housing groups say delay on $2B deal undermining progress: A coalition of affordable housing advocates - which include AARP, the New York Housing Conference and the Supportive Housing Network of New York - says delays in ironing out a deal on how already-approved affordable housing funding should be spent are undermining efforts to address a growing crisis, the Associated Press reports. The groups said they've created their own proposed agreement that would allow housing projects to move forward.
State AG says Allure should be barred from buying nursing homes: The developers who won city approval to flip a nonprofit Lower East Side nursing home for a $72 million profit are so untrustworthy that they should be barred from purchasing another such facility, the Greater Harlem Nursing Home on West 138th Street, state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said, according to The Daily News.
50 Years after debate began on fair housing, discrimination still damages NYC neighborhoods: After decades of work to rebuild neighborhoods and the trust of the people who call them home, we must acknowledge that we are still affected by and damaged by that history, and that low-income communities of color continue to bear the brunt of its assault, Bill Frey, the senior Director and the founding executive director for the New York office of Enterprise Community Partners, Inc., writes in City Limits.
New York state awarded $14.4M in AmeriCorps funding: Gov. Andrew Cuomo says New York state has been awarded federal AmeriCorps funding for 14 organizations to help children, enhance disaster preparedness and address other community needs, according to the Associated Press. The Student Conservation Association was awarded $645,000 to engage youth in environmental stewardship in the Adirondacks and Hudson Valley and the American Red Cross in the Capital Region was awarded $346,000 for disaster response and recruiting volunteers.
Four ways to fix broken communications in the social sector: There are at least four possible reasons for the overall lack of great communications in the social sector, the Stanford Social Innovation Review writes. The good news is that avoiding or fixing these issues is relatively easy and can make a dramatic difference.

William T. Grant Foundation invites proposals for New York City Youth Service Improvement Grants:
The William T. Grant Foundation seeks to improve the lives of youth by supporting small to medium-size organizations that have already had some success but lack the funds to make needed improvements, according to Philanthropy News Digest. To that end, the foundation's Youth Service Improvement Grants program awards grants in the amount of $25,000 to community-based organizations in the five boroughs of New York City working to improve the quality of the services they offer to young people between the ages of 5 and 25.
Putnam Family & Community Services announces new alliance:
Putnam Family and Community Services, Inc. announced a partnership with Coordinated Behavioral Health Services, Inc. becoming one of the newest members of its Independent Practice Association. The association brings together local community-based agencies with the shared goal of providing care management and cost-effective services within a rapidly changing health care system. CBHS is a nonprofit 501(3) membership organization of forward-thinking, community behavioral health and disability service providers in the Hudson Valley Region. It serves over 68,000 people, employs a staff of 6,000, operates a collective budget of $350 million and is a founding member of the Hudson Valley Care Coalition.
Nearly 300 insurance professionals compete in insurance industry charitable softball tournament to raise $65,000 for Mount Kisco Child Care Center:
On July 20, the Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation knocked its 17th annual charity softball tournament out of the park, raising $65,000 for Mount Kisco Child Care Center. The event was held in Central Park and made up of 13 teams of nearly 300 insurance professionals. Mount Kisco Child Care Center is a nonprofit organization that provides affordable childcare and early education to more than 200 children in a safe and healthy environment. The proceeds from this year’s annual softball tournament will ensure the organization is able to continue promoting each child’s intellectual, physical, emotional and social development.
