Councilmember Elizabeth Crowley is the lead plaintiff in the suit filed Wednesday to block conversion of a Holiday Inn Express in Maspeth, arguing that city rules require cooking facilities to be available to shelter residents.

National Labor Relations Board says charter schools are private corporations, not public schools: The NLRB decided in two separate cases last week that, as far as federal labor law is concerned, charter schools are not public schools but private corporations, according to the Washington Post. In its recent decisions, both issued Aug. 24, the National Labor Relations Board ruled that Hyde Leadership Charter School in Brooklyn and the Pennsylvania Virtual Charter School are, like other government contractors, private corporations that receive taxpayer dollars. Sens. Schumer, Gillibrand announce over $930,000 in federal funding for FDNY Foundation:
U.S. Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand announced nearly one million dollars in federal funding for the FDNY Foundation Inc. based in New York City. The money was allocated through the Department of Homeland Security’s Fire Prevention & Safety grant program. FDNY Foundation will receive this funding to advance the foundation’s New York City fire prevention campaign, “Fire is Everyone’s Fight – Get Alarmed NYC,” to reduce fire and carbon monoxide related deaths in New York City. Earlier this year, Schumer and Gillibrand wrote to DHS in support of the FDNY’s grant application.
NOFA-NY names new head:
The Northeast Organic Farming Association of New York has named Andrianna Natsoulas as its new executive director. She took the helm of the statewide organization in August, the Daily Messenger writes. Founded in 1983, NOFA-NY is a member-based, non-profit educational organization of farmers, gardeners, businesses and consumers committed to promoting sustainable and fair local, organic food and farming.

Nuyorican Poets Cafe to upgrade longtime home: The Nuyorican Poets Cafe, a downtown stalwart that has survived decades of neighborhood change, is planning a $10 million-plus renovation that will more than double capacity at its East Village home, the Wall Street Journal reports.
See Gowanus' disappearing Latino population: Michelle de la Uz, executive director of the local social justice nonprofit Fifth Avenue Committee, tells DNAinfo the decline of the neighborhood’s Latino population was the result of gentrification, “displacement pressures” and new development linked to the rezonings of north Park Slope in 2003 and south Park Slope in 2007.
Mural in Crown Heights garden celebrates women and 'wisdom': A mural, named “Passing Wisdom, Planting Seed,” is a celebration of women of color, particularly Afro-Caribbean women who have lived in Crown Heights for decades and serve as positive role models for a younger generation, DNAinfo reports. The three-story mural at Bedford Avenue and St. Marks Place was created by a group of local student artists who worked with Hayes and McDonald as part of a summer art program run by the community nonprofit, Groundswell.
Anti-violence activists call on funding for outreach; turn to NYC for help:New York-based anti-violence advocates went to Chicago to share how they’ve curbed violence in New York City, according to CBS News. They included LIFE camp, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing youth violence and providing empowerment opportunities for youth who are educationally, economically and socially disadvantaged, to help them stay in school and out of the criminal justice system.

Sickest Americans are paying more for care, getting less: Americans with chronic illnesses that limit their ability to care for themselves spend more than 21,000 dollars per person for healthcare, about four times the average for all adults, MSN writes. Despite that higher spending, however, anew analysis from the Commonwealth Fund finds that those with the greatest medical need - defined as people with at least three chronic diseases and a limited ability to care for themselves - were more likely than other patients to have delayed or done without medical care or a prescription.
NYSHealth Launches 2017 Special Projects Fund Request for Proposals:The New York State Health Foundation 2017 Special Projects Fund Request for Proposals is now available. Applicants must submit an online inquiry form to determine whether a proposed project fits the funding criteria. There are two funding cycles for the Special Projects Fund. Deadlines for the online inquiry form are Sept. 27, and March 15, 2017. Selected organizations will be invited to submit full proposals, with deadlines of Nov. 18, and May 17, 2017. NYSHealth Special Projects Fund awards are one-time, non-renewable funding opportunities consistent with the Foundation's mission to improve the health of all New Yorkers but outside of its main priority areas.
