De Blasio will take a ‘hard look’ at Rivington firm’s new deal: Mayor de Blasio said Wednesday the city is re-examining a deal that gave development rights for a Brooklyn armory to the company that hushed up its purchase of the Rivington House nursing home earlier this year, the New York Post reports.
Councilwoman Cumbo blasts city for booting 70 women from Fort Greene homeless shelter: City Councilwoman Laurie Cumbo blasted the de Blasio administration for booting 70 homeless women last week from the Auburn Family Residence in her district with less than 24 hours notice in sweltering heat, according to Kings County Politics. The destitute ladies were transferred to a Holiday Inn near Kennedy Airport to make room for an influx of families into the Auburn shelter.
Great crowdfunding model at New York’s Jewish Museum - “Take me, I’m yours”: New York’s Jewish Museum put its toe into crowdfunding waters when it launched a $30,000 campaign on Kickstarter to support an exhibition entitled “Take Me (I’m Yours),” Nonprofit Quarterly writes. This highly interactive exhibit originally featured interactive pieces by 12 artists, with some elements designed by the artists that visitors could take home.
More than 40,000 New Yorkers benefit from NYC rental assistance programs: Over 40,000 New Yorkers in 13,806 households are living in permanent housing units through the administrations rental assistance and permanent housing programs since the program began in 2014, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced, JP Updates writes.
Giving days donors lack diversity: Giving days have become a vehicle for community foundations to increase visibility and credibility, strengthen digital skills, and raise millions of dollars, although from a donor base that isn’t very diverse, according to the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation which examined various giving days going back to a pilot program the foundation started in 2012, the NonProfit Times writes.

Child Center will receive 1,400 backpacks:
Over the past five years, The Child Center of NY has been a recipient of school supplies-filled backpacks provided by the High Water Women Foundation and its network of corporate and private sponsors. This year, approximately 1,400 Pre-K, kindergarten, middle and high School students (in Child Center programs alone) will again be the beneficiaries of these much-needed gifts. The backpacks themselves are being filled and assembled by volunteer employees of the companies donating them.

The Director of CHS will ensure compliance with all regulatory and billing requirements for all designated programs. * De Blasio said charter schools are outscoring traditional public schools because of their emphasis on test prep and added he wants city schools to emphasize “critical thinking” and “problem-solving skills,” drawing criticism from charter advocates, the Daily News writes.
* A bill introduced by New York City Public Advocate Letitia James aims to close the wage gap between men and women by banning employers from inquiring about an applicant’s salary history, with violators facing fines and other civil sanctions, the Post writes.
* The “Blue Lives Matter” bill that would make attacks on police officers a hate crime is the wrong approach, may not make officers more safe, and deflects from needed conversations about police safety and social justice, writes New York City Councilman Jumaane Williams.

In a jam-packed city, an escape in 10,000 acres of wetlands, forests and trails: As the city and its parks grow more congested, a nonprofit conservancy group tasked with protecting natural areas has stepped up its efforts this summer to increase access to them as an alternative to the frictions of city life,the New York Times writes. In June, the Natural Areas Conservancy released a comprehensive public guide and map to all 10,000 acres of natural area that highlights its unusual features and plant life.
Sept. 11 Memorial Motorcycle Ride ending on a sour note: Leaders of a massive, annual motorcycle procession to the three Sept. 11 crash sites said this year's fundraising ride, Aug. 19-21, will be their last, according to the New York Times. Ted Sjurseth, founder of the nonprofit America's 911 Foundation, said he's tired of battling Maryland and Virginia state police and highway agencies' reluctance to block Washington-area traffic for 1,200 motorcycles.
Josh Breitbart is thinking about the people left behind by Brooklyn’s tech boom: Technically profiles Josh Breitbart, the senior advisor for broadband in the Mayor’s Office. At the New America Foundation, Breitbart partnered with the nonprofit Red Hook Initiative, which was expanding its neighborhood wireless network after Superstorm Sandy with the help of its Digital Stewards youth program.
