NYN Media Spotlight - LGBT health care nonprofits foresee DSRIP problems amid success: LGBT health care providers are worried that if allowances are not made in the reimbursement procedures for smaller healthcare organizations like theirs, in the near future doctors may become hamstrung by bureaucracy and already-vulnerable patients will suffer. These problems do not only impact LGBT health care providers, community health care nonprofits say. Standing room crowd raises concerns over Harlem homeless shelter: A developer accused of promising condos while planning a homeless shelter in Harlem skipped a meeting packed full of protesters, DNAinfo reports. The center, located on West 136th Street, was formerly owned by Harlem’s historic Mother AME Zion Church and bought by Developer David Levitan, who runs 339 Development LLC. Read more.
Where are all the principals of color?: In her current role as a senior staffer with NYC Leadership Academy, a New York City-based nonprofit, Gutierrez uses what she learned as a principal to prepare a new generation of principals of color, according to The Atlantic. Girl’s hair chopped off without permission at after-school program: A 9-year-old Brooklyn girl left at an after-school program came home with her hair chopped off, her mother says in a lawsuit, according to the New York Post. The Madison Square Boys & Girls Club acknowledged that the “inadvertent haircut” happened last June, and that it fired the part-timer responsible. Read more.
Staten Island cleanup effort to get financial boost from City Council members: Another $306,000 will be added to boost funding for ongoing cleanup efforts in Staten Island, through a joint effort by local City Councilmembers, the Staten Island Advance reports. The funds are part of NYC Cleanup, a City Council initiative sponsored by Matteo and Borelli, which employs local nonprofit Where to Turn to remove litter, debris, weeds and graffiti across the borough. United Way of New York City board of directors elects new co-chairs:
The Board of Directors of United Way of New York City - the nonprofit organization that has partnered with government, corporations, foundations, and community-based organizations serving low-income New Yorkers for nearly 80 years - announced the election of Donald F. Donahue and Michael J. Schmidtberger as co-chairs of the board. Donahue, who retired as president and CEO of the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation in 2012, and Schmidtberger, managing Partner of Sidley Austin LLP’s New York office, assume the position from Robert J. Kueppers, who served as board chair since February 2012, and will continue to serve as a member of the emeritus board.
DOROT honors Targoff family, raises $600,000 at 40th annual spring benefit:
During the benefit, which raised close to $600,000, Kim and Josh Targoff were honored at the benefit for their contribution to DOROT and the Intergenerational Chess Program. DOROT hosts a chess program that matches teens with seniors for weekly games of chess. The Targoffs, whose son started the program, have funded the program as well as its expansion to Westchester County, New York. DOROT, which celebrated its 40th anniversary, is an organization whose mission is to alleviate social isolation among the elderly and provide services to help older adults live independently as valued members of the community. New York Bar Foundation awards grant to Mental Health Association of Westchester:
The Mental Health Association of Westchester received a grant of $2,500 from The New York Bar Foundation to support its Court Appointed Special Advocates program. Those volunteers advocate for children who are in foster care or at risk of foster care and monitor and report to Family Court judges on physical health, behavioral health and educational needs of the children. This advocacy work also includes contact with the child, biological and foster parents, case managers and other service providers involved in the child’s life. Prior to their appointments, CASA volunteers must complete a robust 30-hour training.

The Regional Director is responsible for the oversight of four OMH Licensed Housing sites in Manhattan, a Congregate Permanent Housing site in Manhattan and a 500 bed Scatter Site Housing Program with offices in the Bronx and Brooklyn. An ‘interim destination’ for remembering 9/11 will get a bigger space: The private, nonprofit, ad hoc 9/11 Tribute Center center will move into a new space at 88 Greenwich Street, where it will occupy 35,000 square feet, almost three times as much as it has now, the New York Times writes.
