Assemblywoman Margaret Markey said the city postponed the planned Oct. 1 start date after a telephone conversation she had with Mayor Bill de Blasio and Steven Banks, commissioner of the Human Resources Administration and Department of Social Services.
Natural History Museum files expansion plan: An ambitious $325 million expansion at the American Museum of Natural History, which has rankled some neighbors, took another step forward Thursday when the museum filed its plans for the project to the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission, the Wall Street Journal reports. Some aspects have changed since the museum first announced plans for the Richard Gilder Center for Science, Education and Innovation in late 2014, adjustments that respond, in part, to community concerns over the impact on the surrounding public park.
What Does This New Study Mean for the Future of Charter School Giving?: Using data from charter schools in Texas, Princeton’s Will Dobbie and Harvard’s Roland Fryer found that while charter schools improve student test scores and rates of enrollment in four-year colleges, those academic outcomes have not translated into better jobs or earnings, Inside Philanthropy writes. The program assists nonprofit organizations with law-related projects that: facilitate the delivery of legal services to those in need; improve the justice system and the law; enhance professional competence and ethics; and increase public understanding of the law. Thousands to honor those lost on 9/11 and all first responders who have died in the line of duty by wearing feathers of remembrance:
On the 15th anniversary of 9/11, tens of thousands across the country will honor those lost that tragic day and recognize the sacrifices made by the City's first responders by joining Answer the Call – The New York Police & Fire Widows' & Children's Benefit Fund, in their second annual "Feathers of Remembrance" campaign. Family members of fallen FDNY, NYPD and Port Authority Police, active and retired NYC first responders, businesses, and thousands of members of the public will be wearing the flash tattoos on the 15th Anniversary of 9/11 to honor those lost.
ServiceWorks AmeriCorps VISTAs join Citi to participate in largest 9/11 National Day of Service activity in New York City:
On Sunday, Sept. 11, ServiceWorks AmeriCorps VISTAs will join Citi employee volunteers to participate in the largest volunteer effort in New York City commemorating the annual 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance. This day, established into law in 2009, is designed to honor those who were lost on 9/11 and encourage a continued sense of unity through service and reflection. In New York City, ServiceWorks AmeriCorps VISTAs will serve as team leads for thousands of volunteers, including hundreds of Citi employee volunteers, to prepare 500,000 meals for New Yorkers in need.

New Washington Heights career center aims to help immigrants utilize city services: Patch reports that city officials celebrated the opening of a new career center in Washington Heights created to provide the neighborhood's large immigrant community easy access to city services and career guidance. The new Workforce1 Career Center on West 181st St. is the result of a public-private partnership between two city departments - the Department of Small Business Services and the Human Resources Administration - and philanthropic organization The Robin Hood Foundation.
'Limited access letters' used unfairly to ban parents from schools: A little-known letter that's supposed to be used to protect schools from unruly parents in the wake of aggressive incidents is actually being used to unfairly silence outspoken parents in low-income black and Hispanic schools, critics say,according to DNAinfo. Advocates for Children recently worked with a family from an Upper Manhattan public school given a limited access letter after the father sought the nonprofit's legal assistance because the school wasn’t providing his child mandated special needs services.
Woman’s Club of Albany commits to youth: The Woman’s Club of Albany, which saw its membership drop to just three elderly women in 2003, but experienced a resurgence and now boasts 150 members of various ages, is the first local nonprofit to make a pledge, payable over several years, to financially support a student through Capital Region Sponsor-A-Scholar, the Times Union writes. Like many smaller nonprofits, the club doesn’t have the financial ability to donate that amount in one shot, but is able to do so over a period of time.
Plan to convert Queens Hospital’s ‘T Building’ into supportive housing gets mixed reaction: Queens Hospital Center’s “T Building” in Jamaica currently sits vacant, but there’s a plan in place to transform the structure into an apartment and supportive housing complex, QNS.com reports. This plan, however, has some steadfast and committed opposition that spoke out during a public hearing on the proposal Wednesday night at the hospital.

The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers receives grant from the New York Life Foundation to support grieving teens: The New York Life Foundation, which is dedicated to childhood bereavement awareness, is partnering with the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to support students with exceptional artistic and literary talent, to help creative teens express their grief through the healing power of the arts. This new partnership will provide creative services and support for bereaved teens in grades 7 through 12 – a time when access to special programs that foster healthy social and emotional development is critical.
Dance/NYC calls for integrated performance grant proposals: Dance/NYC invites self-identified integrated dance makers to submit proposals for grants ranging from $15,000 to $30,000 to support production costs for integrated performance(s) in the New York City area from January 2017 through March 2018, according to Broadway World. The purpose of the funding initiative, made possible by support of the Ford Foundation, is to generate dance making and performance by and with disabled artists. This activity is intended to advance artistic innovation and excellence--and, by extension, further disability rights.
