My Plan
Two months ago Stu and I left NZ and headed for Canada – with a 6 week tour of the US on the way. We were planning on spending 3 months in Vancouver and were totally ready to ground ourselves in one place for 3 months when we arrived.
When Things Don’t Go As Planned
Life obviously had other plans for us though because when we got to our place in Vancouver it was totally infested with moths!! We got rid of them, but cancelled the rest of our stay and started the hunt for somewhere else.
Looking for a place for less than 3 months in summer (peak season) in Vancouver was a challenge – it’s slim pickings and very pricey for something nice. We were getting ready to accept anything we could find when a few offers finally came in. Phew!
We thought we’d extended our stay at the first place to cover us until the new place became available, but found out with 2 days to spare that this hadn’t been confirmed and so we were going to be homeless for 8 days before we could move into the new place.
Deciding to use this time as an opportunity to take a last minute trip to whistler, we found somewhere to stay, packed up the house and booked a bus to get there.
And so, the outcome from what could have been seen as a stressful and unsettled time was a trip to Whistler and a new, nicer place to stay. Woop!
Moral of the story = Stay open to the possibilities and something better is likely to happen
It’s Easy To Give Up
It could have been easy for us to get totally overwhelmed and disheartened when things weren’t going as planned. But these are the times when it’s so important to see the bigger picture and keep going.
You just never know what the final outcome will be – and most of the time it ends up being better than the original idea you were so attached to.
So don’t give up when you most want to. Have faith that everything will work out and consider my top tips below to help you to keep going.
Four Ways To Keep Going When Things Go Wrong
1. Reassess The Situation
Take some time to stop pushing forward, to look at your plan and see the situation as it is right now. How has it changed and what resources do you have available to help you to get where you want to be?
2. Brainstorm Solutions
Once you know exactly where you are, you can start to brainstorm potenial plans that will help you to move forward again. Write down all the ideas you have and assess which one is going to be the most fun, encounter the least resistance and get you to your destination?
3. Stay Open To The Possibilities
Even once you have your new plan laid out, don’t become too attached to it. Be open to new ideas or opportunities that come to you and could slightly change your plan, but for the better. This will help you to reduce the number of roadblocks you face plus it helps you to keep moving forward even when things go wrong.
4. Stay Positive
Remember that things tend to find a way of working out, so stay positive. The more positive and open you are, the more easily a solution can become reality.
