Sad, sexless, and sober one pill at a time

There’s an old saying among us fellas that wine, women, and song make the world go ’round. But if your hairline seems to be racing toward the back of your head, I hope you have a jaunty tune in your heart — because Big Pharma is working hard to take the wine and women out of your life forever.

Now get a load of this. A new study led by a George Washington University professor is claiming that while the popular hair loss drug finasteride (Propecia) may leave you with a less than stellar sex drive, the good news is that you’ll probably end up drinking less alcohol.

I’ve heard of putting lipstick on a pig — but this time Big Pharma has that swine decked out in an evening gown and heels!

Researchers followed 83 men who were suffering from sexual side effects of Propecia — and, trust me, these men weren’t that hard to find. A study found that sexual dysfunction, depression, and suicidal thoughts, were associated with Propecia.

Of the 63 men who were enjoying at least one drink a week before taking Propecia, 41 men cut back on their alcohol after starting the drug. Researchers think Propecia may somehow interfere with the production of certain hormones that are linked to alcohol cravings.

Big Pharma is trying to spin this as good news, but I’m not buying it. I don’t know about you, but when my love life hits the skids, I find myself wanting to drink MORE, not less.

But, seriously, you can bet drug companies aren’t above using this kind of research to try to distract us from a major side effect. Now I can’t swear that wine, women, and song are the keys to happiness, but I’m pretty sure sad, sexless, and sober aren’t either. And this study is just another reminder that nasty side effects are exactly what many mainstream drugs serve up, one pill at a time.
