“Like other schools across the country, Piedmont Virginia Community College has a retention problem. First-year students arrive ill-prepared for the rigors of college, said Frank Friedman, the school’s president. Friedman estimates that only about half of students entering PVCC every year will eventually transfer or graduate….
Last spring, Piedmont launched a pilot program focusing on guiding new students through their first year. The program emphasizes peer mentoring, tutoring and career advising, and it’s aimed at retaining students who might otherwise get discouraged….”
