On Thursday, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory announced the appointment of one of its deputy directors to lead the National Nuclear Security Administration facility in California. William Goldstein, currently the lab's deputy director for science and technology, will become the director of LLNL and the president of Lawrence Livermore National Security, the consortium contracted to manage the site. On Monday he will replace Parney Albright, who resigned unexpectedly in November. LLNL conducts research under NNSA's nuclear weapons stockpile stewardship program, as well as projects in energy, homeland security and other areas. Goldstein has worked at the lab for 29 years. In that time he was involved in a range of physics projects and oversaw the development of the Jupiter Laser Facility, according to an LLNL release. He holds a doctorate in theoretical physics from Columbia and a bachelor's in physics from Swarthmore.
