Ntegra Greenside 2014 US Study Tour

The 18th annual IT Leaders Study Tour to USA in May 2014 delivered an extremely successful tour for all our delegates.  The focus of the tour was “Silicon Valley Disruption” and we explored, emerging technologies that should not be ignored.

We live in an age where the speed of technology change has never been faster and all indicators suggest that this will continue to accelerate. This creates enormous challenges for those leading IT in major organisations. Keeping abreast with technology change and interpreting the opportunities and threats presented demands exposure to the latest thinking. There is nowhere like Silicon Valley to get a truly immersive experience of technology innovation and to learn about how organisations similar to your own are driving outstanding business performance by embracing the opportunities offered by these new technologies. Yet for IT to provide the stimulus for growth it needs more than technology and great ideas – it needs IT leaders who know how to translate innovation into actions. Our Study Tour will help you to do this.

Today, empowering technologies are increasingly available first to individuals rather than to enterprises and this is increasing pressure on IT leaders. Those involved in IT are used to rapid change but new consumer focused technologies, such as mobile, social media, cloud and big data have created fresh challenges for both IT and the business. It is inevitable that groundswell technologies will continue to shift information power to customers and employees. IT leaders must shift their mindsets for a world where technology projects can come from anywhere and IT is a key enabler, not necessarily the manager, on those projects. This power shift cannot be stopped, but IT leaders can take advantage of it. We shall focus on some of these innovative technologies and help delegates better understand how to embrace them for business benefit.

This year we met with key vendors, investors and thought leaders in Silicon Valley to gain first hand experience and expert opinion of how innovative technologies are being used for business advantage. Also  we met with CIOs of major companies to understand their challenges and how they are tackling them. These learning experiences have proven to be invaluable on this Study Tour. Organisations were carefully selected with specific emphasis on enabling those IT leaders that come on the Tour to make their organisations and themselves more effective.

We saw new technologies and delegates who have access to the senior executives and technical experts of these companies, whose products and services generally are often released in UK well after their release in USA. Two days of this year’s Tour was dedicated to short presentations from key portfolio companies of two of the Valley’s most influential investors – Intel Capital and Sequoia Capital. This gave delegates the ability to take first mover advantage for the adoption of some of these technologies.

The Tour has been designed for senior IT and business executives and will deal with both management and technology issues. Numbers are limited to no more than 20 to facilitate maximum interaction. We are very excited about this year’s programme and hope that you and/or one of your colleagues will be able to join us.

As important as the programme is the opportunity to share new ideas and experiences with peers from different and diverse organisations. Many delegates on earlier tours have stressed the benefits gained from the experiences of their new colleagues. (See Testimonials on page 14).

Palantir’s software is deployed in major public sector departments, private enterprises and the non-profit sector to address the challenges of responsibly making sense of complex, diverse data.

Palantir’s solutions are backed by its data fusion platforms: Palantir Gotham and Palantir Metropolis. A data fusion platform acts as a clean, coherent abstraction on top of different types of data that all describe the same real world problem, just as an operating system creates the clean and coherent software abstraction on top of the collection of hardware we call computers. Just as operating systems heralded a sea change in application development, data fusion is the future of data-driven decision-making. These technologies for integrating, visualising and analysing massive amounts of information are revolutionising the work being done in pursuit of many of the world’s most critical missions, from defence to anti-fraud to disease response.

Palantir’s initial funding came from In-Q-Tel, the CIA’s not-for-profit venture capital firm, and it has received several rounds of funding from the Founder’s Fund, a venture capital fund run by former PayPal chief executive and Facebook backer Peter Thiel. Palantir is emerging from the shadow world of spies and special ops to take the corporate world by storm and it is this part of its business that is driving its $9bn valuation.

A dynamic and scalable big data cluster built on the production-proven BlueData platform allows businesses to respond to their big data needs quickly, easily, and at a fraction of the cost. BlueData customers typically extract value from their data in a matter of days instead of months and save 50-70% on overall costs by improving the utilisation of their resources.

Docker www.docker.io

Docker is an open-source engine that automates the deployment of any application as a lightweight, portable, self-sufficient container that will run virtually anywhere.  Docker containers can encapsulate any payload and will run consistently on and between virtually any servers. The same container that a developer builds and tests on a laptop will run at scale, in production, on VMs, bare-metal servers, OpenStack clusters, public instances, or combinations of the above.

Today, developers build and assemble applications using a multiplicity of the best available services and must be prepared for those applications to be deployed across a multiplicity of different hardware environments, included public, private, and virtualised servers.  This creates a difficult situation for both the developers, who are writing applications, and operations, who are trying to create a scalable, secure, and highly performance operations environment.  Docker overcomes this by creating a container that comprises an application and its dependencies. Containers serve to isolate processes that run in isolation in user space on the host’s operating system. This differs significantly from virtualisation that aims to create an entire virtual machine.

Common use cases for Docker include automating the packaging and deployment of applications; creating lightweight, private PAAS environments; automated testing and continuous integration/deployment; and deploying and scaling web apps, databases and backend services.

Its first app is WorkinBox, an actionable inbox connected to CRM. WorkinBox helps salespeople be more responsive to their customers and helps companies, who sink $12 billion a year into CRM systems that nobody really uses on the road, manage their sales teams.  Tylr’s main differentiator is its technology platform that provides a unique way of building and deploying dynamic mobile apps that are flexible enough to meet the needs of the enterprise.  It has received investment from Alchemist Accelerator,Citrix, Salesforce.com, Oracle and SAP.
