(Arlington, Va.) Jo Ann Emerson, CEO of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association, today congratulated five electric cooperatives ranked in J.D. Power’s top fifty “2014 Customer Champions.” The cooperatives making the list are Clay Electric Cooperative (Fla.), Jackson EMC (Ga.), Sawnee EMC (Ga.), SECO Energy (Fla.) and Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative.  Only one other electric utility was included in the list.

“Once again cooperatives lead the way, and I am proud that these five cooperatives received one of the nation’s most prestigious awards for excellence in service,” said Emerson. “The ‘2014 Customer Champion’ award demonstrates these co-ops are living up to the central value of not-for-profit electric cooperatives – putting members first.”

J.D. Power, in conjunction with FORTUNE Custom Publishing, looks at companies’ performance in five key areas of customer service — people, presentation, price, process and product. These companies were the highest performers, based on customer feedback, among more than 600 evaluated brands across nine industries.

The National Rural Electric Cooperative Association is the national service organization that represents the nation’s more than 900 private, not-for-profit, consumer-owned electric cooperatives, which provide service to 42 million people in 47 states.
