Please contact museum@cdc.gov for further information. The Welch Foundation at Georgia State University, the David J. Sencer CDC Museum, and the Plastic Pollution Coalition jointly announce the 2015 Welch Symposium entitled The Plastic GYRE: Artists, Scientists and Activists Respond. The two-day symposium will take place on March 26-27 at Georgia State University and the David J. Sencer CDC Museum in Atlanta, GA.

Conceived by Pam Longobardi, GSU Distinguished University Professor, Professor of Art and founder of the Drifters Project, this unique conference brings together top scientists, artists, activists and industry as partners to raise awareness about the global crisis of plastic pollution. The symposium is free and open to the public, and will feature panel sessions, film screenings, a pop-up art exhibit, and a “call-to-action” press conference to affirm collaborative solutions on how to address and reduce plastic pollution.

The program is organized in conjunction with a major international exhibition, GYRE: The Plastic Ocean, travelling from the Anchorage Museum, on view at the David J. Sencer CDC Museum from Jan 26 through June 19.

The Gyre is the scientific term for the ocean currents that propel plastic pollution around the world. The symposium goals are to expose the environmental and public health issues related to plastic pollution and to work collaboratively to offer solutions.
