According to the Brooklyn Paper, the idea to install a rooftop garden came from the school’s devoted parents, who spent years raising funds for the project from politicians and private donors.
“This a generation of stewards of this planet, for environmental and climate change stress,” said Diana Zelvin, vice-president of the school’s parent-teacher association.

Now that the urban growing lab is complete, the objective is to teach students hands-on gardening skills that will allow them to grow their own sustainable food. The Brooklyn rooftop garden program has proven to be so popular that Borough President Eric Adams has already committed $167,000 in taxpayer funds to build more indoor farms at other educational institutions in the city.
