Clad in timber with a muted color palette, the Lantern Ridge House easily camouflages into the dense forest landscape. The U-shaped structure is carefully sited to optimize views of both the sunrise and sunset. Near full-height windows bring in generous amounts of natural light, frame views of the outdoors, and create a near seamless indoor-outdoor experience. The pine ceiling extends to the outdoors to shade the exterior deck and protect the home from harsh sunlight.

“The project’s strong connection to the environment provided opportunities to utilize materials and technologies that would enhance and sustain the very nature from which the house draws its strength,” write the architects. In addition to providing panoramic views, the carefully placed openings also maximize winter sun, facilitate natural ventilation, and minimize summer solar gain. The house is kept warm in winter through in-floor radiant heating and an energy-efficient wood-burning stove. Locally sourced and crafted materials are used extensively through the house, from the locally milled pine ceiling and dark siding to the handcrafted bench placed at the entryway.

The open-plan living room, dining area, and kitchen are located at the middle of the home. The private areas—two bedrooms and a guest suite—flank the communal room as two wings on either side.
