BMW is the world’s most sustainable company, according to the Corporate Knight’s 12th annual Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations list.
The automaker is followed by software company Dassault Systems in second place, construction and engineering firm Outotec in third, Commonwealth Bank of Australia in fourth and Adidas in fifth. Gas utility Enagas, Danske Bank, telecommunication firm StarHub, household products company Reckitt Benckiser Group and real estate management firm City Developments round out the top 10.
Corporate Knights says companies that make the Global 100 ranking are the top overall sustainability performers in their respective industrial sectors, selected from 4,353 listed companies.
One of this year’s findings is the link in executive pay for sustainability performance. In 2016, 87 percent of the Global 100 firms provided a monetary bonus to executives who achieved sustainability targets.
BMW moved to the top of the Global 100 list, up from sixth place in 2015. The automaker turned in top-quartile performance against peers for its efficient use of water, energy and lack of waste, Corporate Knights says.
BMW also made the CDP 2015 Climate A List, which includes companies that received an A grade for their actions to mitigate climate change. CDP published its annual list in November.
US firms earned 19 positions on this year’s Global 100 Index. France is home to 11 companies; there are 10 Scandinavian companies and Canada and United Kingdom each account for nine on the list.
