What made you start training and why did you continue?

My passion for fitness started when I began playing rugby at the provincial level during my school years. Although I was quite shy and self-conscious, I however had a bigger physique than most my peers. As a result, my friends and family always kept encourage me to pursue a fitness or modelling career, and eventually I did.

I initially started modelling in a few runway shows for Mr and Miss South Africa. But my career didn’t really kick off until I stepped out of my comfort zone to pursue something bigger, which lead me competing, and surprisingly winning the Body Beautiful South Africa contest.

To give you an idea how much this meant to me, Body Beautiful is one of the most prestigious fitness and bodybuilding shows in South Africa. And by winning it, my career fast tracked to becoming a national fitness model. Having said that, I have to give a lot of credit to my lifestyle coach and mentor Juan Bothma at the time.

The next show I competed in was the 2013 WBFF title in South Africa. I was up against some of the biggest names in the fitness industry, and once again to my shock, I managed to place first.

Afterwards I entered the WBFF world stage at Las Vegas, however, this time I didn’t end up placing. After this event, I returned home to a different life where I was blessed with sponsorships from Volkswagen, Body Engineers and Evox to name a few.

For the time being, I plan on continuing with my fitness career until I win the world WBFF title. Nevertheless my passion for fitness still grows at an exponential rate. For this reason, I’ve become one of the very few people to never have worked a day in my life, because when you do what you love, it is never called work.

If you started training again, what would you do differently?

It would be taking more time to research on using the right supplements. Although I did win the WBFF competition in SA, I had never used any supplements, simply because I didn’t know any better.

Furthermore, I would also seek for a life coach and training partner much earlier, because I believe these two factors are a must have for prepping for any competition.

The last change would have to be not devouring food until I end up in the hospital. After my first show, I managed to munch on so much food that I managed to gain 18kg in a few days. From now on, I will always try to maintain my physique throughout the year, because coming back from a bulk is very hard work.

What are your current and future goals?

At the moment, I’m beginning to build my personal brand and business. I have just recently reached 50,000 followers on Facebook, which is quite a big milestone for me. I also have my fingers cross to importing Body Engineers clothing range to SA soon. On top of that, I’m planning to open up a supplement store at FIT 360 private gym in Silver Lakes Pretoria, where I currently reside as a personal trainer as well.

My biggest goal would be to win the 2015 WBFF world’s title in Las Vegas. After my first international competition, I’ve learnt a lot and understand that it’s a whole different ball game to travel and compete at the same time, particularly when it’s in an entirely foreign country.

What does your favorite training regime look like and what do you like most about it?

It would have to be training my legs. My legs use to be my worst body part, however, now I have developed them into my best asset. The training regime includes:

Single leg-extensions, while super-setting double leg extensions

Single leg press

Double leg press (For the last 5 reps, I perform them as slowly as possible, so that I intensify the burn!)

Squats

Seated calf raises

Standing calf raises

Toe Press

Lunges

In addition, I do a brief walk during my rest time, making sure I squeeze the quad muscle to optimise growth and blood flow.

I enjoy doing legs, because I know it is one thing that separates me from the vast majority of gym-goers.

What is your favorite exercise and why?

The deadlifts, because it stimulates every single muscle in the entire body.

How do you keep your motivation up?

I get a great boost when I help others to achieving the most out of themselves. I’ve found out that the more I achieve, the more I can inspire others. And of course, nothing is better or motivating then seeing results when I vigorously diet and train.

What supplements would you recommend for someone that’s new to training?

I’m a big fan of Evox supplements. I believe 3DT is a great workout to try, fat buners, whey protein, glutamine and conjugated linoleic acid. Evox casein protein is also great when I have a sugar cravings. All I do is mix it with water and leave it in the fridge for 30 or so minutes to create a delicious pudding.

What are 3 tips you would give to a beginner?

It is not how you start, but how you finish. Keep on moving forward, even when you don’t feel like it.

Get a coach and a training partner that can keep you accountable.

Work towards a goal. Believe in yourself even when no one else does. Remember, impossible is nothing, every achievement can be achieved with a strong mindset.

What are your hobbies besides making gains?

I’m a freelance photographer on the side. So I do shoots for weddings and fitness individuals when I am not competing. I also do modelling, which I have been recently featured in a water world programme that was shot at Sun City. Apart from that, I love the thrill of a new challenge and am always up for some fun.

Who are your idols and why?

Phil Heath and Lazar Angel. Why? Well it’s quite obvious!

Famous last words

One god, one life, zero regrets!
