Bermuda National Gallery invite you to see a short run exhibition that is currently in their Private Collection Series.
This will feature a painting by Norman Lewis (1909-1979). Born in Harlem, New York to Bermudian immigrants, he was inspired by the artistic vibrancy of the Harlem Renaissance. In the 1940s. His painting style shifted away from social realism (drawing attention to the treatment of minorities) to abstraction (working alongside Romare Bearden and Jacob Lawrence). The painting on display sits on the edge of this transition in style.
Opening hours are from 10am until 4pm, Monday to Friday, and from 10am until 2pm on Saturdays, closed on public holidays. The exhibit will run until August 15th.
Admission is $5 for adults and free for BNG members, NARM members, seniors, students and children.

The Foundation classes are designed for complete beginners and those wishing to revise basic skills. This four-session course will run from 9.30am until 11am each day on Saturday and Sunday, August 15th and 16th, and on Saturday and Sunday, August 22nd and 23rd.

The Iyengar method of yoga is systematic and thorough. Through careful structuring you make safe and steady progress. You start with asanas (postures), including savasana (relaxation) and gradually more difficult asanas are introduced as your depth of understanding increases. After some time, in accordance with the Yoga Sutras, pranayama (breathing technique) is introduced. Some epic history will meet some modern day family fun at the 240th Anniversary of the Bermuda Gunpowder Plot on Saturday, August 15th.
From 5pm, there will be a special reenactment of the infamous 1775 conspiracy, with a full team of actors from Rockfire Productions rolling gunpowder barrels down the hill to Tobacco Bay.
This important but little-known event of the American Revolution took place as tensions with Great Britain rose. Two Bermudians, St. George Tucker and Thomas Tudor Tucker, separately informed leaders of the American cause that the lightly-guarded magazine on Bermuda contained about 100 barrels of gunpowder, which was in short supply in the colonies.
With that intelligence, Benjamin Franklin and others in Philadelphia were able to convince a few Bermudians to “appropriate” the gunpowder and have it loaded on American ships waiting off of Tobacco Bay. In exchange, the Bermudians received a partial exemption from the Continental Congress’s trade embargo, which would allow Bermuda to continue receiving the American farm products on which islanders depended.
Some of the gunpowder went to Charleston, South Carolina, where it was used in the successful defence of Sullivan’s Island in June 1776. This famous battle prevented the early occupation of Charleston, one of America’s most important port cities at that time. Thanks in part to Bermuda’s gunpowder, Charleston’s port would remain open to shipments of weapons, gunpowder and other goods from American allies until 1780, thus altering the course of the war in favour of the Patriot cause.
From 6pm, after the reenactment, Tobacco Bay will host an evening of live entertainment on the beach, featuring the full band of D.I.A., with DJ Bubble’s video screens, bonfire, BBQ, Colonial-themed cocktails and guest entertainment until midnight.
There is no cover charge.
For more information, contact 705-SAND (7263), info@tobaccobay.bm, or visit www.TobaccoBay.bm.

This will be followed at 5.15pm by The Wolfpack, the extraordinary story of the six Angulo brothers which won a Grand Jury Documentary Prize at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival.
More details on the films can be found at www.BermudaDocs.com.

The energetic abstract painting on display conveys Riopelle’s passion for experimentation and exemplifies the style that earned him international acclaim.
Opening hours are from 10am until 4pm, Monday to Friday, and from 10am until 2pm on Saturdays, closed on public holidays. The exhibit will run until September 5th.
Admission is $5 for adults and free for BNG members, NARM members, seniors, students and children.
