Come out for an illustrated presentation that showcases high tech equipment and techniques in an effort to ensure that the the Newell’s Shearwater, like the Cahow, survive into the future at BUEI Talks: Studying Endangered Seabirds on Another Small Island in the Middle of Nowhere by Dr. André F. Raine on Monday, June 8th.
What does a Hawaiian island in the Pacific Ocean have in common with Bermuda? Like Bermuda and its famous seabird the Cahow, the island of Kaua’i is home to another very rare seabird species – the Newell’s Shearwater. 90% of the World population of this shearwater is found here, along with internationally important populations of the Hawaiian Petrel. Trying to study and protect these birds is particularly challenging as they only come to the island at night and breed in remote and treacherous mountainous habitats.
Dr André F. Raine is a Bermudian ornithologist who has worked on conservation projects throughout the World including the Amazon, Africa, Seychelles, Portugal, Canada, England, Malta and Hawaii. He currently runs an endangered seabird project on the island of Kaua’i, undertaking research and conservation actions to protect three of Hawaii’s rarest seabirds. He has written three bird guides, including the ‘Photographic Guide to the Birds of Bermuda’, and numerous scientific publications.
The lecture itself will start at 7.30pm and Harbourfront are offering a 10% discount to anyone dining there before or after the event. Reservations are available from 5pm for the sushi bar and the full menu will be available from 6pm – please mention the lecture when booking to avail of the discount. Tickets are $20 for members, $25 for non-members and available by calling 294-0204 or visiting Oceans Gift Shop at BUEI.

It was shortlisted for the 2010 Forward Poetry Prize for Best First Book in the UK and was also a finalist for the Cave Canem Prize.
Campbell studied at Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar and obtained his Ph.D. from Duke. His essays and poems have been published widely in the Caribbean, the United Kingdom and North America.

Enjoy some traditional pomp and circumstance as the Regiment Band joins the Bermuda Islands Pipe Band in performing a Beating of the Retreat Ceremony from 9pm on Front Street on Wednesday, June 24th.
The Beating of the Retreat Ceremony, in its earliest form, was simply a drummers’ call. The Drum Major and his men would march around the camp or city streets playing drum taps to warn soldiers that it was time to return to their billets, put out their fires and go to bed. This performance was known as the retreat and many regretted that they did not heed the drummers’ call.
Eventually, a pipe time was added to the drummers’ calls and a more elaborate ceremony emerged. Later on, bugle calls were added and the parade evolved into the present day Beating of the Retreat Ceremony.
The massed bands march on, perform separately and then re-mass for the evening hymn and the playing of Sunset, at which the flags are lowered signalling the end of the day. The bands then march past the guest of honour – His Excellency the Governor, the Honourable Premier, Worshipful Mayors, et al.
The Regiment is celebrating its 50th Anniversary this year and more information can be found by following the hashtag #BR50.
