Morning Ladies and Gents!

Well, I love the occasional rainy day as much as anyone but I’m definitely ready for some blue skies again – fingers crossed for this weekend!  Here’s the latest rundown of what’s happening in Bermuda over the next month or two:

Red Steakhouse and Bar have kindly provided details of their weekly events for the month.

On Wednesdays you can enjoy Steel Pan Performances by Robert Symons and allow his music to take you to your own personal paradise. From 5.30pm until 9pm, lovely relaxing rhythms will make the steel pan as warm as a tropical island breeze. Red will also be offering 20% off all bottles on their wine list, which has officially won the Wine Spectator award for 2013/2014.

With an open air patio overlooking the water, Red is one of Front Street’s hottest spots to spend your Friday Night. Happy Hour will run from 4pm until 7pm with drink specials including $5.50 highballs, $6.50 beers, and $7.50 on select house wines. Dinner reservations are welcome or just enjoy light bites from the bar menu in the lounge or patio. The talented DJ Ole begins every Friday at 10.30pm and plays a mix of popular music, remixed old favorites and Latin vibe music until 2.30am.

On Saturday evenings, guests will be offered a complimentary amuse bouche and palate cleanser by Executive Chef Chad Mitchell. Ukulele artist Mike Hind will then be creating the vibe throughout dinner. He is a true entertainer playing songs on request and adding in his own unique lyrics for humour until 10.30pm. Late night entertainment will them be provided by The Big Chill’s DJ Felix who will be playing the best in house, deep house and late night jams.

Sunday, August 17th will be Salsa Night at Red. From 8.30pm until late, DJ Mezcla will be playing your favourite salsa and bachata hits. Happy Hour drinks prices will be available, as will Red’s tapas menu. Newbies and experienced dancers alike are all welcome and there is no cover charge.

For more information, or to make a reservation, contact Red at 292-7331.

There are three new exhibits currently showing at the Bermuda Society of Arts (BSoA) in City Hall.

In the Onions Gallery, BSoA is hosting their annual Emerging Artists Show, giving new and developing artists a platform to make their debut and launch their art career. With the objective of making more art, they are working to stimulate creativity and encourage artists-in-training to join the Society and, most importantly, to exhibit their work. Featured artists include Bryce Pantry, Charann Woolridge, Denae Simmons, Gabriel Frith, Elca Maranzana, Damien Thompson, Kevin Roberts, Langre Edwards and Jordan Fairn

In the Edinburgh Gallery, Faces of Kiwoko: A Journey to the Ugandan Bush by Dee Storey will be exhibited. Stepping into the dry heat of the Ugandan bush, camera in hand, Dee Storey was unprepared for the incredible impact this trip would have on her as an individual. Dee Storey travelled to Uganda in 2013 to see the work of The ISIS Foundation at Kiwoko Hospital as a representative of Aspen, an insurance and reinsurance company. Aspen has supported ISIS’ work at Kiwoko since 2007, and each year a handful of selected Aspen staff members from offices across the globe come to Kiwoko to see firsthand the impact of this partnership. Every year, they leave inspired.

Studio A & B will be showcasing Our History in Hats by Ronnie Chameau and Donna Pink. The artists have chosen local, natural materials such as coconut matting and palmetto palm to re-create hat styles that were worn by women in Bermuda from the 1700s up to the 1950s. This exhibit is designed to demonstrate how simple, organic materials that would normally not be considered beautiful, can be used creatively to achieve the same fashionable looks worn by women throughout the ages. Photographs of these women will accompany the exhibits.

These shows will close on Tuesday, August 26th at 4pm.

For more information, contact 292-3824 or bsoa@ibl.bm.

In her latest body of work, Abstraction: Palms, Portulacas, Peppers and Pansies, Gillian Outerbridge explores abstraction through a series of manipulated photographic images of nature.

The opening reception is on Friday, August 15th from 5.30pm until 7pm and the work will be on view in Homer’s Café at Masterworks.

The show will run until Thursday, September 11th and artwork is available for purchase.

Since his passing on December 3rd, 2001, very little has been done to highlight Hubert Smith Sr., an outstanding entertainer who is also the copyrighted composer of Bermuda is Another World.

A series of activities, including dinner theatre with a new play, is aiming to change this.

Firstly, on Sunday, September 14th, Gail Palacio hopes to open her memorial to Mr. Smith with her second mural on the Angle Street wall. It will be blessed at 1pm, after the morning service at The First Church of God directly opposite, and there will be refreshments and some entertainment.

Taking place at Fourways Inn, Hubert Smith will be performed on September 26th, 27th and 28th, and then on October 2nd, 3rd and 5th, promising to be a great play that educates you on the life of this local legend while you enjoy an excellent meal.

The show will last around 40 minutes and the all-star cast will include Gene Steede, June Caisey, Stan “Lord Necktie” Seymour, and Duke Joell, with live band The Masterpiece Trio, who grew up playing many of the standard Calypso tunes of the day and have an extensive repertoire of Jazz to intersperse if needed.

Showtime is at 6pm on Sundays, 7pm on all other days and tickets cost $70 in advance or $80 at the door. The price includes a 3 course set plate dinner and a cash bar will also be available.

The dress rehearsal at 6pm on Sunday, September 21st will also serve as a seniors and student matinee. Tickets for this performance cost $50.

Tickets are available from Fourways and Music Box.
