Café Coco at Coco Reef are spicing up your weekdays with two different weekly events for the summer season. On Tuesday evenings, you can taste some of Bermuda’s favourite flavours at their Island Buffet and on Thursday evenings, you can enjoy the thrill of the grill at their Summer BBQ. Both run from 7pm until 9pm and cost $43 per person. This will run weekly until October 15th. These events are in addition to their Happy Hour with $7 drinks in La Vista Bar between 5pm and 7pm, Monday to Friday. As mentioned previously, Thursdays are Theme Night with Will Black at Hog Penny. Author, professor, and chef Eddie Ming presents a night of live music, at Eddie Ming’s Rhythm Lab at #6 Old Military Road, St. George’s Community Centre Complex on Friday, May 9th. Doors open at 6.30pm and the evening will begin at 7pm, featuring senior drumming students accompanied by vocalist Sheila Smith and pianist Toni Bari, as well as a vegan cheese tasting and vegetarian buffet. The next Thyme for Art event takes place on Friday, May 9th and Saturday May 10th. The featured artist will be Mary L. Tatem, a jeweller working with fused glass, silver, copper and gemstones, who makes pendants, earrings, and belt buckles sold with interchangeable belt straps. There is no charge to come and meet the artist and she will be located at the entrance to Thyme Restaurant, in The Club building in the Fritholme Gardens condominium complex. Friday’s hours are from 5.30pm until 9pm and Saturday’s hours are 11.30am until 3pm and then again from 5.30pm to 9pm. St.George’s Prep PTA are hosting a fundraising Community Fun Day and Olympiad at the school field on Saturday, May 10th. This will be from 2pm until 6pm and will feature bouncy castle, the large bouncy slide, food, drink, bake sale, temporary tattoos, snow cones, popcorn and cotton candy. At 2.30pm, there will be an official Ribbon Cutting Ceremony to open their newly built Sports Court and then the Olympiad event will start at 3pm, with 10 teams of 6 competing in outrageously hilarious events. The MAMA Summer Fair is back on Saturday, May 10th from 3pm until 6pm at Somersfield Academy. This will be full of family-friendly fun, such as a bouncy castle and inflatable obstacle course, ball pond, toy town, popcorn, zorb ball, fish a duck, putting game, arts and crafts, tattoos, face-painting, football, refreshment stalls, balloons, and more with entertainment by Wayne, Gombeys, Dancesation and Dottie the clown. Watch a recent blockbuster under the stars as Twilight Entertainment’s Summer Series kicks off on Saturday, May 10th with a screening of Captain Philips at Number 1 Car Park on Front Street. An opportunity to see some of Bermuda’s best boxers battle it out out will be at BIBA Saturday Night Fights: Homecoming at BAA Gym on Saturday, May 10th. After selling out three times already, this event is being repeated for a 4th time! Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute (BUEI) presents new footage and a Q&A with Ocean Vet host Neil Burnie and members from the film crew on Monday, May 12th. Ocean Vet is a factual entertainment series like no other and follows the exploits and adventures of Dr. Neil Burnie in the oceans around Bermuda. The Ocean Vet crew are currently filming a full 12 part series from March to October 2014. The show is being made by UK video production company gassProductions, creators of the hit Discovery and WFN fishing show Rod and Rucksack. Ocean Vet will be broadcast internationally in 2015. Episodes include tagging tiger sharks, hunting for black grouper, following humpback whales on their migratory journey, monitoring for night sharks, adventures through the floating jungle and so much more! This is your opportunity to see the latest footage and hear first-hand from the host and film crew. Doors open at 6.30pm with Happy Hour prices on drinks at Harbourfront. The Devonshire Lions United Neighbourhood Watch are hosting a special meeting to address Disaster Preparedness & Risk Reduction on Tuesday, May 13th. This will be from 6pm at the Devonshire Recreation Club and speakers will include Diane Gordon, Disaster Manager, Bermuda Red Cross and Petra Spencer-Arscott, Education Manager, Bermuda Red Cross. PechaKucha Bermuda
is hosting its 7th Edition on Thursday, May 15th at 6pm at the Chewstick Neo-Griot Lounge. PechaKucha Nights were started in Japan and have a 20×20 presentation format where each speaker shows 20 images, each for 20 seconds. The images advance automatically and you talk along to the images. Since there is no pausing or going back, speakers have no choice but to keep to their allotted time. Come out and support the Canaries Ladies Hockey Club as they host a special Bubbles and Bites Happy Hour at Gosling’s Wine Cellar on Friday, May 16th. This will run from 6pm until 8pm and the eponymous bubbles will be a selection of 6 different wines including bruts, proseccos, and sparkling wines. A variety of sweet and savoury nibbles will also be served during the event. Some of Bermuda’s most talented young people will soon be singing, dancing and acting their way through an intensive 7-day theatrical programme and then capping this off with original musical theatre, Bermuda Glee. Auditions for this year’s Bermuda Glee will be on Saturday, May 17th at the Berkeley Institute with registration at 9am. This is open to students aged between 14 and 18 who are interested in singing, dancing, acting or working behind the scenes. The course is designed to provide Bermuda’s young people with an opportunity to work with each other and teachers from secondary schools across Bermuda. The programme itself will run from Saturday, June 28th until the show on Saturday, July 5th. I will update with ticketing details for the show once available. A fun-filled family day is in store at the Bermuda Institute Spring Fair on Sunday, May 18th. From 11am until 7pm at the Bermuda Institute Complex in Southampton, you can expect face painting, a dunk tank, he-man striker, lollipop tree, cook off, white elephant sale and get your teams ready for the obstacle course at the end of the fair. Bermuda is always being voted one of the best dive spots in the world. The entire Bermuda community is invited to participate as the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Bermuda (BBBS) has rescheduled their Wacky Walk-a-thon fundraiser to Sunday, May 18th starting at 8.30am from Charities House on Point Finger Road. A prize will be given to the Wackiest Walker so all participants are invited to don their craziest attire and join in the fun. You can wear mismatched clothes, costumes or a funny hat, the crazier the better and the only limit is your own imagination. If you’d rather not wear something wacky, you are asked to wear a white t-shirt instead. This fundraiser for BBBS is also an opportunity for students to gain 2 community service hours. The walk-a-thon will be a 5K starting at Charities House going throughout Hamilton and back and will be preceded by a warm up activity. Students who complete a pledge sheet will earn an additional hour of community service in recognition of the time it takes to go out and seek pledges. Walkers who do not get pledges are asked to make a donation of $15. Snacks will be provided by the walk’s sponsors Dasani, Kashi and Coca Cola. Promising Bermuda’s ultimate party weekend, Gemini Dream Weekend (GDW) offers 5 distinctly different events held over 3 days from Friday, May 30th to Sunday, June 1st.
