I am loving this extra sunlight in the evenings but I HATE the first few mornings after the clocks move forward. Many more Bermuda springtime events are being added to the calendar – I can only imagine how busy summer is going to be:

will be giving a talk at BUEI on Thursday, March 13th. David is a contributing photographer to National Geographic and other magazines and is in Bermuda collaborating with the LookBermuda team led by Jean-Pierre Rouja on the LookBermuda Nonsuch Island project. As well as his book, A World in One Cubic Foot, David will also be discussing other exciting works in progress. Doors open at 6.30pm with Happy Hour prices on drinks at Harbourfront. The lecture itself will start at 7.30pm and Harbourfront are offering a 20% discount to anyone dining there before or after the event. Grab a bargain at the Peace Lutheran Church’s Car Boot Sale on the third Saturday of every month, with the next one being on Saturday, March 15th. This will run from 9am until 2pm and items for sale will include clothes, shoes, toys, household items, books, CDs, DVDs, jewellery and lots more. An opportunity to experience a night of Ethiopia’s ancient tradition is on offer as Muse Restaurant and Skybar is hosting an Ethiopian Dinner with a Traditional Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony on Saturday, March 15th. The Bermuda Botanical Society (BBS) are hosting a presentation by Diana Antonition, President of the Bermuda Rose Society on Thursday, March 20th. Propagation of Roses and Slide Show Featuring the Roses of England will begin at 6pm in the Education Room at the Bermuda Aquarium in Flatts. The cost is $5 for BBS members and $10 for non-members.
Calling tennis players of all abilities, the Bermuda National Trust presents the 22nd Annual Open Calcutta Tennis Tournament from Thursday, March 20th to Sunday, March 23rd at the Coral Beach and Tennis Club. The festivities will kick off with Complimentary Cocktails and the Calcutta Auction at 6pm on Thursday, March 20th. A $49 dinner menu will be available on this evening for all participants and guests. Throughout the tournament, a daily lunch will be available in the main dining room for members and non-members. Ladies’ Doubles will be on Friday, March 21st from 9am to 1pm with Mixed Doubles on Saturday, March 22nd and Mens’ Doubles, the Finals and the Prize Giving on Sunday March 23rd. The cost is $100 per person for one event or $150 per person for two events. This fee includes the cocktail party, sandwiches and refreshments. WindReach invite you to join them at Clearwater Beach on Saturday, March 22nd for a community event promoting awareness of the need for accessibility and exercise for all. The 13th Annual WindReach Walk & Roll is open to walkers, runners, bikers, strollers and wheelchair users, and this fun 3km, 5km or 10km walk will take you through the scenic Cooper’s Island Reserve, while helping to raise money for programmes that benefit persons with special needs. Individuals and teams are welcome to join in the fun and the 10k route will start at 9am, followed by the 3k and 5k at 9.30am. The registration fee is $25 per individual, $15 per student or roller. There will be awards for the largest corporate and community team, and awards for the most funds raised by an individual and by a team. SCARS (Saving Children And Revealing Secrets) offer a free award-winning training programme entitled Stewards of Children and the next is from 9am until noon on Saturday, March 22nd. This three hour evidence-based training programme is designed to educate adults how to prevent, recognize, and react responsibly to child sexual abuse whilst using video segments of survivors sharing their stories along with experts and concerned individuals sharing their perspective. Included is an interactive workbook which involves group discussion. The facilitator will be Jon Brunson and the programme helps adults entrusted with the care of children to overcome denial, fear, secrecy and provide awareness, safety and personal power. The Hope Academy For Girls in Sierra Leone is hosting 8 international fundraising events in 7 countries this Spring and Bermuda will join in with the United Kingdom, Sierra Leone, Vietnam, New York, Australia and Germany to support. The Festival of Hope Fundraising Dinner will be at ClearView’s award-winning Landfall Restaurant at 7pm on Friday, March 28th. Limited tickets are available for this intimate three-course dinner to raise money in support of the building of the girls’ school, which helps vulnerable young girls continue their education, giving them hope of a brighter and a more stable future. Now in its 5th year, but with a brand new name, the Grey Goose World Par 3 Championships (previously the Bacardi World Par 3 Championships) will run from Friday, March 28th to Sunday, March 30th at the Fairmont Southampton’s Turtle Hill Golf Club, ranked in the top five best par-3 golf courses in the world. This two-day 36-hole championship golf tournament is the world’s premier par 3 golf tournament, attracting 190 participants from around the globe, including a number of noted professionals. Tournament fees are $325 for professionals and $225 for amateurs. Spectator viewing is free. Saturday, March 29th will be a celebration of Bermuda’s very best asset at the 3rd Annual Bermuda Beach Art Festival. Artists of all skill levels are invited to participate in this island-wide sand art competition from 11am until 1pm at as many beaches as possible. The eco art creations will only last until the next high tide washes it away. In addition, there will also be Yoga from 11am until noon at Elbow Beach and Horseshoe Bay. The Awards will be at 6pm at the Seabreeze Terrace at Elbow Beach and there are cash prizes of $500 in each of the 5 categories – adult, family, teen, tourist and best overall. Don’t know anything about beach art? Don’t worry, as guest beach artist and judge, Andreas Amador, will be holding three workshops from Tuesday, March 25th until Thursday, March 27th from 5pm until 6.30pm daily. On Saturday March 29th, everyone in Bermuda is being asked to turn off all their lights from 8.30pm to 9.30pm to mark Earth Hour, a global initiative involving millions of people showing their concern for the environment. There will be a full slate of activities at City Hall and Washington Mall to mark Earth Hour. From noon until 5pm, there will be a Living Green Expo in the upper level of the Washington Mall. Vendors showcasing their green products and services will include BES, Butterfield & Vallis, and Orange Bay. From 6pm until 9.30pm, there will be a community event on the lawn at City Hall with children’s activities, face paintings and entertainment, including a performance from Bermudian Broadway star Rebecca Faulkenberry and her Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark co-star Reeve Carney. At 7pm, there will be a film screening in City Hall (full details to follow) and at 8.30pm there will be light out entertainment, as well as the start of the Walk of Flame. This is a family fun walk through the darkened streets of Hamilton. The entry fee is $20 and you can sign up online at www.racedayworld.com. All organisations, churches and families are being encouraged to support the event by making it part of their calendars and by turning off all unnecessary power for an hour, either on the day or in the run-up to the event. Now in its second year, the Deep Bay Music Festival will be on Sunday, March 30th. This authentic live music event will begin at 4pm at Pembroke Community Club on North Shore and will feature two bands, the Giant Steps Band fresh from their performance at the Havana International Jazz Festival, and a new band called Masterpiece. Featured singers include headliner Cool Jade Minors, Elca Maranzana, Stan “Lord Necktie” Seymour, and the AFB Cha Cha Dancers. The event will be presided over by the Deep Bay King and Queen, Stanley Morton and Joan Dismont, who will be making a grand entrance. Nashville-based musical ventriloquist Megan Piphus is visiting Bermuda to perform in four family shows at the Earl Cameron Theatre on Saturday, April 5th. Showtimes for Megan Piphus and Friends are at noon, 2.30pm, 5pm and 7.30pm and will feature pre-show performances by Mr. Magic, the In Motion Dancers and Youth Emcee Marcus Smith. Megan has previously appeared on America’s Got Talent, The Oprah Winfrey Show and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and promises an unmissable children’s event with music, ventriloquism and puppetry to inspire them to dream big and in colour. The Bermuda Squash Racquets Association (BSRA) promise four nights of epic battles at the Randall and Quilter Legends of Squash event from Tuesday, April 8th to Saturday, April 12th. Six former world number ones, including Peter Nicol and Jonathon Power, will be featured, as well as Bermuda’s own Nick Kyme. After the Meet the Players Welcome Cocktails at Coral Beach Club from 6pm to 8pm on Tuesday, April 8th, the players will take part in 4 days of competition from 6pm each night from April 9th to 12th, culminating in the Randall & Quilter Legends of Squash Final on April 12th. A new exhibit is coming to the Rick Faries Gallery at Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art in April. There is a reason why watercolour has always been a significant medium in Bermuda and Water Ways will showcase how the light and colour here are a watercolourist’s dream with turquoise water, pastel houses, white roofs and dark and dramatic foliage for contrast, along with rapidly changing weather and clouds. Homer, Pleisnner, Demuth and, more recently Malcolm Morley, along with a host of others, both foreign and local, have all explored Bermuda to great effect with watercolour, taking advantage of the immediacy and transparency of the medium to interpret our surroundings. Artists Chris Marson, Charles Knights and Molly Godet paint together on a regular basis with the Bermuda Plein Air group and their work shows the results of many hours spent outside, braving the elements, in front of an easel. The show promises to be full of light and air and the drama of nature. You will see three very different styles here, but all three friends and fellow-painters greatly respect one another’s abilities and feel that this show will be an ideal showcase of the strength of modern watercolour in Bermuda. Several good causes are in line to benefit from the CMS 5K Walk/Run on Sunday, April 27th. This will start at 8.30am and will begin and end at Bernard Park. Prize categories include the 5K Competitive Charity Walk, 5K Competitive Charity Run, 5K Charity Fun Walk, 5K Charity Fun Run, and the 5K Charity Fun Roll, which is for participants with strollers, wheel chairs, bicycles, scooters, skate boards, rollerblades, etc. The entry fee is $20, or $10 for families or group of 4 and above. Part proceeds will be donated to Meals on Wheels and the Eliza Dolittle Society, with other proceeds benefiting the Clara Muhammad School (CMS) to purchase educational materials.
