Well, I think it’s safe to say that the rest of 2013 is NOT going to be dull with all the events that are coming up. There’s sure to be something for everyone in this latest round-up of things to do in Bermuda – the hard part is choosing:
Gillian Outerbridge is currently exhibiting Morning Walks, St. George’s, a collection of photographic images in Homer’s Café at Masterworks which opened on Friday, November 1st. The turkeys are getting ready for the Bermuda Gas Pre-Christmas Fun Promotion at the Bermuda Gas Showroom on Thursday, November 7th. From 5.30pm until 7.30pm, this event will feature food demonstrations with ideas to help you prepare for Christmas dinner and will include samplings, door prizes and giveaways. Another great opportunity to listen to entertaining presentations on a variety of topics, without worrying that any of the speakers will waffle on for too long, as the 5th edition of PechaKucha Night Bermuda will be on Thursday, November 7th. PechaKucha Nights were started in Japan and have a 20×20 presentation format where each speaker shows 20 images, each for 20 seconds. The images advance automatically and you talk along to the images. Since there is no pausing or going back, speakers have no choice but to keep to their allotted time. This will take place at Sandy’s Boat Club and speakers include Becky Wright, Vinny Caldas, Toby Butterfield, Ali Bardgett, Yesha Townsend, Mohammed Hamza, Melanie Fiander and Gavin Djata Smith. Following each presentation is a 3 minute 40 second Q&A session with the audience. Doors open at 6.30pm and presentations begin at 7pm. Admission is free and all are welcome. Do you have a great tourism, technology or local business idea, but need help to get it started? As part of Global Entrepreneur Week from November 18th to 24th, BEDC has announced the 6th Annual Rocket Pitch Competition. This is a chance for entrepreneurs to win cash and startup services worth $5,000. Participants will have 5-7 minutes to present a Rocket Pitch about their business idea within three categories.

The Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute (BUEI) and the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS) invite you to the preview screening of an upcoming documentary on changing diets in coastal people by world-renowned researcher, Dr. Eric Dewailly, and one of Bermuda’s own leading scientists, anthropologist Dr. Phillippe Rouja, on Friday, November 8th. Eating Blubber vs Eating Chips: Learning from Native People’s Changing Diets will be shown in the Tradewinds Auditorium at BUEI on Friday, November 8th. Doors open at 6.30pm with Happy Hour prices on drinks at Harbourfront. The lecture itself will start at 7pm and Harbourfront are offering a 20% discount to anyone dining there before or after the event. Author and speaker Tim Roosenberg is visiting Bermuda to present a seminar on Islam and Christianity in Bible Prophecy on Friday, November 8th. This will be at 7.15pm at the Warwick Seventh-day Adventist Church and will examine the prophecy and history based on Daniel 11:2 to 12:3. In this prophecy, Daniel chronologically covers over 2,500 years of time from 535 BC to beyond the present day. It is understood that the subject matter is volatile, so they promise to be respectful to those from all backgrounds and ask that guests/participants respect others as well. The Northern Caribbean University Alumni Association will be hosting their Annual Church Service on Saturday, November 9th. Sabbath School will begin at 9.30am, followed by Divine Worship at 11am with guest speaker, Dr. Trevor Gardner, President of NCU.
The Barbados Association of Bermuda, a non-profit organization that contributes to worthy causes in Barbados and Bermuda, is celebrating Barbados’ Month of Independence throughout November. The first event is Food Comes First on Saturday, November 9th, We Gine Church Wid Pat on Sunday, November 10th, Kar-ya-own-key on Saturday, November 16th and the Panel Discussion and Health Fair on Saturday, November 23rd. This will culminate with the Award Ceremony, Dinner and Dance at the Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club at 8pm on Saturday, November 30th. This is in recognition of the 47th year of independence and will cost $75 per person. The Bajan Community and its Bermudian friends and family are invited to join each event over the month, where donations to the Eliza Dolittle Food Bank Drive will also be accepted. The Barbados Association of Bermuda will be celebrating Barbadian culture through food at their Food Comes First event on Saturday, November 9th. By order only, Cou cou and salt fish will be available for sale at a cost of $15 and pudding and souse at a cost of $10, $15 or $20. Orders can be collected between noon and 3pm from the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity. You are also asked to bring non-perishable goods to donate to the Eliza Dolittle Society. This event will honour Mrs. Carmeta Frazier, who coined the phrase “Food Comes First” (synonymous with Barbados’ Heritage in Agriculture and Food), as well as all of our housewives, food cart salesmen (in vans or on foot) and the restaurateurs in Barbados and Bermuda, who continue to promote culture through food. Due to popular demand at the Bermuda Docs will be hosting a 5th showing of The Life and Crimes of Doris Payne, a crowd-pleasing documentary about a glamorous and charismatic 82-year-old international jewel thief. Four previous screenings of this film have sold out and this 5th screening will be shown at 3pm on Saturday, November 9th in the Tradewinds Auditorium at BUEI. Some free, fiery and family-friendly entertainment is on offer on Saturday, November 9th as Rockfire Bermuda and Smokin Barrel have teamed up again to present Get Your Grill On. From 7pm until 10pm, you can dine alfresco on Smokin Barrels famous BBQ foods, including ribs, burgers, chicken, jerk delicacies and more, while Rockfire Bermuda heat up the sidewalk with fire shows, accompanied by Kevin Maybury and friends on percussion. This event is free but you can support your Bermudian buskers with gratuities, which will be gratefully accepted. Enjoy all the fun of World Rugby Classic while supporting a good cause by purchasing a ticket to the Bermuda Diabetes Association (BDA) Tent from 6pm on Saturday, November 9th. Food will be provided by Lemon Tree who will be preparing dishes from the 2014 BDA Calendar, which will also be on sale on the night. Bermuda Jam Factory will also be there, selling agave-based jams, which are used in the calendar recipes as well. The Bermuda Arts Council will be hosting its Annual Award Ceremony at the Earl Cameron Theatre in City Hall on Sunday, November 10th. The ceremony starts at 6.30pm and will acknowledge Bermuda’s Pillars of the Arts. This is event is free to the public. An abundance of local talent will be showcased as musicians come together to jam and support local legend Wendell “Shine” Hayward at a Benefit Concert on Monday, November 11th. Getting all dressed up for the holiday season can get expensive but luckily the Bermuda Red Cross have come to the rescue with an Evening Wear Sale on Saturday, November 16th. This will be at Red Cross HQ on Berry Hill Road and from 9am until 2pm, you can browse specially priced, gently used and new evening dresses, skirts, blouses, sacks, shoes, handbags, shawls, tuxedos and jewellery. If you have evening wear in good condition that you no longer have a need for, the main office are accepting donations of such items now.
The Restoration Fellowship will host its 13th Annual International Prophetic Encounter from Wednesday, November 13th until Sunday, November 17th. This year’s theme is Only Believe with speakers including Speakers will be Dr. Dominic Allotey, Dr. Judy Brown-Jones and Dr. Connie Williams. Conference sessions will be held each night at the Fairmont Southampton’s Mid-Ocean Amphitheatre. P.A.L.S. Cancer Care in Bermuda are holding their Annual Fair at St. Paul’s Christian Education Centre, Paget on Saturday, November 16th. From 10am until 5pm, you can enjoy their famous White and Gold elephant stalls, baked goods, books, handcrafts and plants, as well as fun for the youngsters with face painting, fun castles and more, with bingo at 3pm. Now in its 8th year, the spoke-tacular Tokio Youth Mountain Bike Series will be back on Saturday, November 16th. This is a free seven race series and aims to introduce primary school aged children to cycling as a way to help promote physical fitness and healthy lifestyles. The emphasis of the event is on fun rather than being a competitive race as Tokio wants to help foster a love for cycling. Children can ride mountain or BMX bikes, but they must bring their own helmet and sports shoes, and have their parent/guardian sign a waiver. At the end of the seven-race series one child’s name will be drawn as the grand prize winner to take home a bike from Bicycle Works. The fun series schedule is geared up for the following dates: Saturday, November 23rd and 30th, and January 4th, 11th, 18th (skills demo on this date) and 25th. All will be at 4pm at The Arboretum. The November edition of the Bermuda Docs Weekend Film Series will be at the Tradewinds Auditorium at BUEI on Sunday, November 17th. The 3pm screening will be Herman’s House, an award winning documentary about the collaboration between prison inmate Herman Wallace and New York artist Jackie Sumell. This will be followed by Desert Runners at 5.15pm. This documentary film is about four amateur athletes who compete in the Four Deserts Ultra Marathon Series – four, 250-kilometre races over some of the world’s roughest terrain. Sunday, November 17th is not only World Diabetes Day but there is also a full moon. To mark both occasions, the Bermuda Diabetes Association have organised a Moon Walk that evening between 6pm and 9pm, followed by a reception with food, drinks, and music. This is a 2km walk to raise awareness and funds for Diabetes and will start and finish at City Hall. Participants will walk wearing glow in the dark t-shirts and accessories. TLC Ministry presents Kidz Extravaganza on Saturday, November 16th and Sunday, November 17th at First Church of God on 75 Sound View Road, Sandys. The first event will be Kidz On The Katwalk at 6pm on the Saturday. This is a fashion show and entertainment with refreshments on sale. The second part of the event will be the Kidz Service on the Sunday at 4.30pm, which will include dancers, sign language and instrumentals. The Berkeley Institute Library invites you to come and support your favourite school’s songbirds at their fundraising Primary School Choir Competition for the Eastern and Western Zone Primary Schools on Friday, November 22nd and Saturday, November 23rd at the Berkeley Institute Cafetorium. Currently there is a total of thirteen schools participating. Eastern schools competing on the Friday are East End Primary, Francis Patton, Elliott Primary, Prospect Primary, Northlands Primary and Saltus Grammar, while Western schools competing on the Saturday are Mount Saint Agnes, West Pembroke, Gilbert Institute, Heron Bay, Dalton E. Tucker, West End Primary and Somerset Primary. Showtime is at 7pm sharp each night and there are cash prizes for winning schools. Admission is $15 with refreshments on sale.
The Project 100 invite you to escape on a magic carpet ride to their Arabian Nights Charity Gala Ball at the Fairmont Southampton on Saturday, November 23rd. A great excuse to get dressed up and one of my favourite parties of the year – The Caledonian Society of Bermuda’s St. Andrew’s Ball will be at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess on Saturday, November 30th. You do NOT need to be Scottish to attend – you just have to enjoy good food, good company, drinking, dancing or any combination of those. The event kicks off with a cocktail reception (cash bar) from 6.30pm until 7.30pm, before seating guests at 8pm for a four-course dinner with wine, served after the Grand March and MC’s welcome. Dinner will be followed by the ceilidh portion of the evening (Scottish dancing, pronounced kay-lay), with live music from the Bermuda Islands Pipe Band, and then you can dance the night away until 2am with DJ King Arthur. Guest artist Elliott Wilson, will soon be exhibiting his series of paintings in his Artist in Residence Exhibit at Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art. Elliott Wilson is a commodity trader and mining investment expert by day, and a former professional cricketer, Elliott is unlike any previous Artist In Residence that Masterworks has hosted. Elliott tends to work in series of paintings and has done collections of abstract oil landscapes, pop art, representative sketching, drip paintings and collage. His works will be showcased and available for purchase in the Rick Faries Gallery with the official opening on Friday, December 13th from 5.30pm until 7pm. Complimentary wine and cheese will be available and donations are gratefully accepted. The exhibit will run until December 24th. Bermuda National Gallery are celebrating student members in the arts at the Young Members Party Masquerade Winter Ball on Friday, December 13th. The Ball will be held at the Bermuda National Gallery on the 2nd floor of City Hall & Arts Centre from 5.30pm until 7pm. This event is free for BNG Student Members and Students under BNG Family Membership, or $10 for Non-Student Members. The Bermuda Yoga Festival 2014, the first of its kind for Bermuda, is a 4-day yoga and chant festival that brings together a community of people drawn to follow the path of spirit and the heart and will run from Thursday, April 3rd until Sunday, April 6th at the Fairmont Southampton.
