BUEI and the Lionfish Task Force invite you to their latest lecture, Cahow Man, Cahow Cam, on Thursday, October 10th. Jeremy Madeiros, who is Bermuda’s Conservation Officer as well as the eponymous Cahow Man, will share the progress on the Living Museum project on Nonsuch Island. JP Rouja of Look Bermuda will also get out from behind the camera to reveal more about the cahow cam project, a public-private venture that has allowed 24 hour monitoring of this amazing bird in its burrow. Tickets are $15 and available by calling 294-0204 or visiting Oceans Gift Shop at BUEI. Doors open at 6.45pm with Happy Hour prices on drinks at Harbourfront from 6pm. Pining for some live piano to accompany that cocktail? Tony Bari has come to the rescue with a new schedule for October. The Earl Leader Band with Earl Leader, Dennis Francis and Tony Bari on piano will be performing in the Fairmont Southampton’s Jasmine Lounge from 9pm until midnight on Thursday, October 10th, Monday, October 14th, and Fridays, October 18th, 25th and November 1st. Every Saturday in October from 8pm until 11pm, the Tony Bari Trio will be performing live at Cambridge Beaches Resort & Spa. On Sundays, October 13th and 20th, Tony Bari will be performing in The Reefs Hotel Lounge from 8.30pm until 10.30pm. There are two new exhibits opening on Friday, October 11th at the Bermuda Society of Arts (BSoA) in City Hall. Onions Gallery and Studios A, B and C/D will be showing MindFrame & PhotoVoice, an exhibition of art and photography by the service users of the Mid-Atlantic Wellness Institute. Entries to BSoA’s Art in Motion Video Competition will be shown in the Edinburgh Gallery. Opening night will be BSoA on Friday, October 11th from 5pm until 7pm with the usual wine, beer and soda with cheese and crackers provided. The shows will run until Tuesday, October 29th. Football fans, get ready to cheer on your favourite team, as the Corona League will restart for the 2013/2014 season at the Bermuda Athletic Association (BAA) Field on Friday, October 11th. This year’s line up will include BAA Wanderers FC, Flanagan’s Onions FC, Lobster Pot F.C., Lock & Key FC, North Village Community Club, Robin Hood FC, Tuff Dogs Sports Club, Valley FC, Vasco Da Gama and West End United. The game times will be the same as last season with Friday games kicking off at 6.30pm and 8.30pm and Saturdays 2pm, 4pm and 6pm. Many of us aren’t using social media to its fullest potential so the Bermuda Chamber of Commerce and the Bermuda Sun have come together to offer Making Social Media Work for Your Business, a first-of-its-kind local conference on Thursday, October 17th and Friday, October 18th. This two-day social media summit is open to everyone, from social media junkies to corporate executives and promises to teach you something new about turning social media followers into dollars. There will be international presenters, dynamic panel discussions and even a special segment dedicated to those in the tourism services industry. The Thursday sessions will run from 2pm until 5pm at the Chamber of Commerce, followed by a cocktail and networking reception at Muse. This will be in Phase 3 of the Washington Mall (the retail space behind Beluga Bar) and from 11am until 6pm, the showcase will feature a variety of service providers, including entertainers, musicians and DJs, party planners and promoters, equipment and tent rentals and decorators, photography/videography, food and beverages providers, technical services, face painters, online tickets, large children’s fun equipment (bouncy castles, etc), promotional products and venue providers. Dedicated to cancer survivors and their families, A Musician and Her Surgeon at St. John’s Church on Saturday, October 19th promises to be a unique and moving concert. Following a mastectomy, violinist Anne Robert, discovered that she is the carrier of a gene that would almost certainly predispose her to cancer and made the decision to undergo extensive preventive surgery. Her plastic surgeon Alain Bagnon happens to be a brilliant pianist and together they tell the true story of this human journey through cancer through the music of Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Brahms and others, interspersed with inspiring poems and reflections. The Bermuda Arts Centre at Dockyard presents Oil, Water and Wood, a group show with Bermuda’s leading artists, opening on Sunday, October 20th. These recent works will include oil paintings by Christopher Grimes and Jonah Jones, watercolours by Christopher Marson and cedar work by Chesley Trott. The opening reception will be from 5.30pm until 7.30pm and the show will remain open until November 15th. The Arts Centre is open every day and admission is free. In support of the fight against breast cancer and those directly affected by it, Red Steakhouse and Bar is hosting a Ladies Luncheon Gala at noon on Wednesday, October 23rd. Saving Children And Revealing Secrets (SCARS), the first organisation in Bermuda to specifically address child sexual abuse, is hosting a special presentation at 6.30pm on Wednesday, October 23rd. The Prevent Now presentation at Bermuda National Library is a powerful tool demonstrating the magnitude of the issue of child sexual abuse and how it affects a community. Also included is a screening of the documentary, Childhood Stories, created by Darkness to Light, featuring real survivors sharing their stories to show the devastating impact it has had on their lives. Twisted tales and characters will come alive at the Haunted Youth Library on Friday, October 25th. From 5.30pm until 8pm, there will be creepy crawlies, zombies and witches to contend with, but never fear, the librarians will be on hand to make sure you make it through to get your treats. The West End is once again being invaded by the undead on Saturday, October 26th. The annual fundraising Zombie Walk will leave Greys Bridge at 11am and will have participants dressed as zombies shuffling their way to Somerset Village. Parents and kids aged 12 and under are invited to spend the evening trick or treating from 6.30pm until 8.30pm at the Messina House camping facilities at 13 Kitchener Close, Boaz Island in Sandys. In addition to the traditional candy and costumes, local vendors will be on hand with bounce houses, face painting, holiday crafts, food and drink, Christmas gift ideas and more. Costumes are required and kids should bring trick or treat bags. If interested in being a vendor at this event, you just need to decorate your booth with a Halloween theme and be set up by 6pm, with free candy for trick-or-treaters. No paintbrushes or pastels required in TechArt 2013, as this juried show at Bermuda Society of Arts (BSoA) features a wide range of photographic and computer-generated art with varied subject matter. New this year is a special prize for the entry that best reflects why Bermuda is “so much more”, inspired by the #MorePinkBDA. Also running at BSoA is a new exhibit from Kok Wan Lee and Chikako in the Edinburgh Gallery. Opening night will be BSoA on Friday, November 1st from 5pm until 7pm with the usual wine, beer and soda with cheese and crackers provided. You will also have the opportunity to select your favourite for a People’s Choice Award and the shows will run until Tuesday, November 19th. Celebrating the music of the late Donna Summer, Teena Marie and Whitney Houston, Jamais Productions present A Tribute to Legendary Divas on Saturday, November 2nd. This showcase will take place at the Ruth Seaton James Auditorium for the Performing Arts and will feature performances by Bermudian artists , Rochelle Simons-Lecomte’, Teanne Trott, Rovonne Roberts, Verlencia Aberdeen, JamieZuill, Dion Ming, and The Halo Singers accompanied by The Jamais Production Dancers and The Bermuda Soul Collective Band. Presented by The Specialized Youth Arts Charity 679 and Bermuda Magic, the show will feature award winning Canadian children’s entertainers and stars of Treehouse TV, Splash ‘n’ Boots, on their fourth visit to Bermuda. Bermuda has been selected for the International CD release event for their brand new album, Keeping it Green, and the event aims to entertain and educate families on conservation. Fans of Jamaican dancehall reggae will be delighted to know that the line-up for Veterans in Action’s annual show will include Half Pint, Admiral Tibet and Courtney Melody, on Sunday, November 10th. The concert will be happening under a mega tent at Cedarbridge Academy’s North Courtyard with full band accompaniments and musical interludes by Bermuda’s own Blackstar, Prophecy, Leny Global and Magnum Force.
